Copa America Round Three Offers A Duo Of Profitable Picks In Group A

Friday, June 10, 2016 7:18 PM GMT

USA and Colombia look set to decide Group A on Saturday. Will the pair come through for soccer bettors? Here’s a Copa America preview complete with soccer picks.

Recapping Round 2
USA bounced back in round 2 of Copa America behind a comprehensive 4-0 win over Costa Rica. The win lifted USA out of group A's cellar and into second place, behind group leaders Colombia. Paraguay and Costa Rica, meanwhile, are still in play for a spot in the knockouts, but the pair's hopes look bleaker.

Predictably, Colombia are runaway favourites to win Group A in outrights, matched at -2500. However, everything rests on the outcome of Saturday's soccer betting card. The USA could still potential clinch top spot as the +1200 underdogs if they beat Paraguay and Colombia lose to Costa Rica.

USA vs. Paraguay
The Americans look to clinch a spot in the knockouts when they take on Paraguay in the last round of Copa America group play. Although they could still potentially even clinch the group A title the main objective is to gain a positive result in the last round, surely.

After an abysmal opening loss to Colombia last Friday, Jurgen Klinsmann's side resurrected its bid with a 4-0 drumming of Costa Rica. That win put the USMNT into second place and one step closer to the knockouts. As such, the USA enter soccer betting markets as the notional favourites to win in match betting markets, anywhere from +105 soccer odds to +120, the latter of which is the current best price trading and available with Pinnacle.

It's worth considering the draw bet here even, which is available at +250 soccer odds at bet365 amongst several other sportsbooks. A draw would see Klinsmann's side through to the knockouts as the second placed team in Group A.

Paraguay opened their campaign with a scoreless draw to Costa Rica and in the second round they suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to Colombia. This is a must-win game for Paraguay, but they are getting no love from odds makers, matched as the whopping underdogs at +250 to win in 90 minutes or thereabouts depending on your sportsbook of choice.

The fact that Paraguay have scored just one goal in two rounds is something to take into consideration. Not to mention the fact that they had one shot on goal against Costa Rica in round one. Against Colombia, though, Paraguay played better. They had the bulk of possession 54% and, even, mustered up five shots on target. Although it all came to naught – as the Colombians got up 2-0 early in the game and just held on to their lead – it shows Paraguay's fighting spirit and the fact that they didn't give up during the match should give Klinsmann pause, especially if the Americans lose the intensity that saw them blank Costa Rica in round 2.

By all accounts, this is a bit of a tough game to handicap. If USA sit back on their laurels and just play for the draw, they could be in trouble. To put it simply, USA should win and they are worth the tickle at +119 soccer odds, but we wouldn't be surprised if Paraguay do pull off a stunner. Paraguay to win

Colombia vs. Costa Rica
Colombia are riding high in group A behind back-to-back wins. They have yet to lose a match, all while scoring four goals and conceding just 1. Fittingly, they are the side to beat in this section, not to mention one of the competition favourites to win the Copa America. Costa Rica, meanwhile, have yet to strike an audible chord. To say they've failed to impress is to put it mildly. They were held to a scoreless draw by Paraguay in the first round and, then, blanked something awful by the USA. Crucially, they've yet to score a goal in their campaign.

Obviously, Colombia are the favourites at -155 to -175 soccer odds or thereabouts to win in 90 minutes, which is a fair price all things being considered. Indeed, it's surprising their soccer odds aren't much shorter. In any event, it's hard to see beyond a Colombia win in this game with top spot in group A on the line. Put another way, it would take a brave soccer bettor to back Costa Rica as whopping +550 underdogs on their soccer picks.
