Underrated Starter & Better Hitters Make Angels The MLB Pick vs Yankees

MLB Odds makers have made the Yankees a solid home favorite. The Angels seem to always play the Yankees tough though so is there value backing the Halos?

The MLB Odds have come out making the Angels a +147 underdog like at Pinnacle Sports and for my MLB Pick today I will take them at that number. This is good value on an underrated starter for Los Angeles on the mound and a team that does not strike out much.

Los Angeles Angels
Matt Shoemaker takes the mound for the Angels and comes in with a 5.50 ERA and 1.43 whip with Angels hitting .261 as a team which ranks 12th in the major leagues. Shoemaker has been far off from his career ERA under 4.00 but that was mostly due to just a couple bad starts early in the season.

More recently has been steady allowing just 11 runs in his last five starts and only four in his last three. He is a quality major leaguer who has the ability to go deep into ballgames which I expect today against a Yankees offense that has struggled most of the season. They also just got back Huston Street who is one of the better closers in the league with a career 2.83 ERA and 1.03 whip.

At the plate the Angels are decent averaging 4.35 runs per game which ranks 13th in the league and have an on base percentage of .326 which ranks 10th. This is all highlighted by a team that has the best player in the American League in Mike Trout and one that does not strike out often ranking first in the major leagues in strikeouts per game. They make pitchers work for outs and this is just too much plus money to not take them in this spot.

New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka gets the start for the Yankees and comes in with a 2.78 ERA and 1.00 whip but New York is only hitting .236 as a team. That average ranks them 26th in the league and across the board they have been one of the worst offensive teams in all of baseball. Currently they rank in the bottom four of all major league teams in runs per game, batting average, OPS, and BABIP (batting average on balls in play where they rank dead last). I don't know how much longer it will be until the Yankees completely overhaul their personnel.

Tanaka has been one bright spot and can be lights out at times. However, he can be knocked around occasionally and has been less than stellar at home with a 4.55 ERA. The Angels, as mentioned, do not strike out very much and should make him work today. Expect for him to pitch well but for the Angels to plate enough to give their own underrated starter enough support to get the win. This game could really go either way which again in my opinion puts value on going against New York today even at home.
