Relentless Red Sox Are A Spot-On MLB Pick vs. Weak Royals

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 6:09 PM GMT

The Red Sox lineup is a tough matchup for any pitcher, especially the type of pitcher that has control issues and falls behind hitters early in the count. I highly recommend an MLB pick on Red Sox.

Boston Red Sox vs. Kansas City Royals
The defending champion Kansas City Royals will try to post back-to-back wins for the first time since the middle of April when they host the red-hot Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series. Tonight's matchup is a classic case of ride the hot and fade the cold, the Royals have dropped 13 of their last 19, while the Red Sox have won 7 of their last 8. A bunch of offensive pitching metrics and the MLB odds point to the away team taking the first of a three game set tonight in Kaufmann Stadium.

What We Know
It does not matter if it's the last week, the last 2 weeks, the last month, the Boston lineup is the hottest hitting team in all of baseball and it is not even close. The Red Sox have at least 100 more points in team OPS then the second hottest hitting team over the last week. Going by the last two weeks of rankings they are over 100 points higher as well. Maybe most impressive, the Red Sox have over 1.000 team OPS over the last 7 days. Boston averaged 10.4 runs a game, hit 32 home runs in their past 20 games, most in the majors in that span.

The Red Sox top MLB with 229 runs, 59 more than the Texas Rangers, who rank second in the American League. "We are getting contributions up and down the lineup," manager John Farrell said. "It's fun to be a part of." Most notably Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (JBJ) who was named the AL player of the week, after hitting .469 with 15 hits, 15 RBIs, five extra-base hits and a 1.297 OPS.

Rick Porcello
Rick Porcello takes the hill for the Red Sox and he has been the definition of solid. The former 1st rounder has gone at least six innings in 15 consecutive starts going back to last season and turned in a quality start in six straight. Rick Porcello has impressed overall this year going 6-1 with a 3.11 ERA

Yordano Ventura
Opposite of Porcello is Yordano Ventura, who carries a 3-2 record with a 4.62 and a 1.57 WHIP. He ranks first in the American League in walks allowed with 28. Ventura is also the only pitcher in baseball that is a qualified starter sporting a negative strikeout to walk percentage; he currently sports a -1.2 K-BB%.

The 24 year old Dominican throws hard, but he has lost a tick or two off of his fastball and as previously mentioned has major control issues. Those are two indications that there may be something wrong in terms of health for the young righty. Ventura is 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA in three career starts against the Red Sox.

Conclusions
The short price of -124 on the Boston Red Sox is not giving enough respect to this Red Sox lineup and the matchup at hand tonight. This lineup is the exact profile that Ventura has shown the vulnerably to give up crooked numbers and failing to record many outs putting pressure on the bullpen. The Royals last game went 13 innings, having to use a plethora of pitchers in the pen, making tonight's matchup even more of an issue for the defending champs. The Red Sox lineup is a tough matchup for any pitcher, especially the type of pitcher that has control issues and falls behind hitters early in the count. I highly recommend an MLB pick on the Red Sox as the moderate favorite.
