MLB Picks Of The Day: Best Of Late Night American League Games

Thursday, May 19, 2016 1:34 PM GMT

We provide you with our analysis on the each day's slate of MLB games. Thursday provides some really attractive pitching matchups. Let's keep this run of good luck going  with our MLB picks.

Houston Astros vs. Chicago White Sox

Chris Sale Is Unhittable
Chris Sale isn't just an undefeated pitcher with occasional help from his offense. He's a one man wrecking crew as he's simply unstoppable and can zip a "K" past the opposing hitters like Nolan Ryan used to back in his prime. For the season, Sale is 8-0 with a 1.67 ERA has been nearly perfect up until this point of the season.

In his last 6 outings, he's given up 1 run or less on 5 occasions and managing to go 7 innings or more 5 times. To sum it up, in those 6 outings that we were talking about, Sale pitched 45 1/3 innings and allowed 22 hits, 5 earned runs while walking 7 batters and striking 39 batters.

That's as close to perfection that you'll see in this day and age as it's reflected in the Chicago White Sox overall record of 24-16. Sale faces a major test tonight as the Houston Astros have underachieved this season, but they still possess hitters such as Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa.

The Astros have taken the first two games of this series, outscoring the White Sox 11-8.

Little Man, Big Numbers
Normally, when I'm analyzing one specific team, I stick with, but 5 foot 5 inch leadoff hitter, Jose Altuve, is that great, I immediately "flip the script" and go over to the Astros as they have some bigtime young talent with the combination of Altuve and Carlos Correa.

For the season, Altuve is hitting 9 HR, 26 RBI, and a.348 BA. Just look at what he's done! He has a total of 100 bases, 38 runs (16 more than anyone on his team), 56 hits (14 more than anyone on hs team), 17 doubles, 15 stolen bases, and a .437 OBP%. When you talk about a 5-tool baseball player, Altuve is it.

If the Astros can turn things around, Altuve would have a good shot at an MVP award, but he's more concerned with winning. People talk about Mike Trout and Bryce Harper. I have someone that there overlooking and his name is Jose Altuve.

Even though the Astros have this young talent, good pitching wins baseball games and the White Sox have the best in Chris Sale and he's on home turf.

The line is a little high, but Chicago is the MLB pick.

New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics

An Opportunity For the Bombers
It's early in the season, but the 17-22 New York Yankees need to make up some ground as they've dug a big hole for themselves in the American League East Division. What better way to dig yourself out, but to face an Oakland Athletics team that is going nowhere and starts a really rotten pitcher tonight in Kendall Graverman (1-5, 5.84 ERA).

Ellsbury Must Stay Healthy
New York is coming off of a much needed 4-2 victory in the desert against the Arizona Diamondbacks. They only managed 9 runs in the 3 game series, but might have found something with Jacoby Ellsbury. I follow the Yankees closely and when Ellsbury isn't hurt for an extended period of time and plays small ball, the Yankees win baseball games. Ellsbury produces runs with his hustle.

Ellsbury is coming off of a game in which he reached base all 5 times that he took to the plate. He was 3 fo 3 with 2 walks, 2 runs, and an RBI. Ellsbury is also a great base stealer. He's actually stolen home this season and his health will be the deciding factor as he set's the tone at the leadoff position.

Ellsbury banked a huge contract with New York, now it's time for the Yankees to see some returns.

Couldn't Buy a Hit
Another player that I want to mention is Chase Headley. This is a player that couldn't buy a hit at the beginning of the season. I don't remember the exact numbers, but he must have been 4 for 50. Now, Headley has hit his first home run of the season and finally managed to turn things around.

In the month of May, Headley is batting .275 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. These are good numbers as his current batting average stands at .207 and the Yankees need some pop at the bottom of the order.

Look for New York to carry the momentum over from their last game to tonight with a win.
