MLB NLDS Picks of the Day For 10/8/16

Chicago Cubs players walking on the field

Coming off of a 2-0 day yesterday, we look for a repeat performance with our MLB Picks of the Day as the NLDS is the focus on Saturday. While there have been a handful of upsets in the AL, the NL has gone more according to plan. Let's take a look at today's games.

San Francisco Giants vs. Chicago Cubs

Another Tough Pitching Matchup For the Giants

San Francisco already has their backs up against the wall as they lost 1-0 yesterday against a tough pitcher in Jon Lester and tonight, they face Kyle Hendricks, who has simply been on fire this season. There is no let up with this Chicago Cubs pitching staff and you add in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and this team will be a tough team to beat tonight and in any other game.

Kyle Hendricks

The objective of the game is to win, but earned run average is the most important pitching statistic. Kyle Hendricks (16-8, 2.13 ERA) has exceeded expectations this season and can actually be an ace on most pitching staffs. He's been virtually unhittable all season long.

Hendricks has allowed 3 runs or less in 28 out of 31 starts this season and in two other starts he's allowed 4 runs. He's been able to be consistent all season long while sustaining excellence. Look for Hendricks to have another outstanding performance as this San Francisco Giants lineup led by Hunter Pence (13 HR, 57 RBI, .289 BA) and Buster Posey (14 HR, 80 RBI, .288 BA) lacks overall power and leaves a lot to be desired. This is a team whose leading home run hitter is Brandon Belt with 17 home runs. This is a great spot for the Chicago Cubs as they face former Cubs pitcher, Jeff Samardzija, but Samardzija isn't nearly at the same level that he was at when he pitched for Chicago.

Baez To The Rescue

I mention Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo on a regular basis when covering Cubs games, but 2nd baseman, Javier Baez, was the big hero last night as he hit the game winning home run. Baez, who saves runs on defense with his glove, has quietly had a very respectable season at 14 HR, 59 RBI, .273 BA. This Chicago Cubs team can hurt the opposition in so many different ways, but tonight it all starts with the pitching of Kyle Hendricks.

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Washington Nationals

Must Win Situation For the Nats?

We're only 1 game into this series, but in a short series such as this, it's very difficult to come back from a 2-0 deficit. While Clayton Kershaw was merely average yesterday, but still got the victory against Washington, the Nationals are likely to see him again and this could cause a major problem as they look to advance to the next round. Let's just say this is a bigger game for Washington than Los Angeles and the Nationals have a very reliable starter in Tanner Roark (16-10, 2.83 ERA) who takes the mound this afternoon. Roark has been somewhat unlucky regarding run support. The Washington offense will need the step up as they look to even up this series.

Roark finished up the season strong with 6 out of his last 7 starts being defined as "quality starts". In these games, he's pitched 41 2/3 innings and has allowed 10 runs. Roark could've been a possible 20 game winner if he were provided more run support and Roark provides the Nationals with the pitching edge in this matchup. Los Angeles doesn't have an overwhelming offense. Rookie, Corey Seager homered in yesterday's win and has been a big reason why the Dodgers won their respective division, but if Tanner Roark can pitch the way that he's capable of pitching, the Nationals should be in good shape.

Table Setter

When mentioning the Nationals, I've been talking about the outstanding season that Daniel Murphy had and the biggest disappointment in baseball in Bryce Harper, but one player that's often overlooked is right at the top of the lineup and has an outstanding season in Trea Turner.

When Turner play's well, Washington usually play's well. While Turner has only had 307 at-bats, he's made the most of his time in the majors. This is a player that can hit for average, hit for power, and use his speed on the basepaths.

For the season, Turner has 8 triples, 13 HR, 40 RBI, a..342 BA and 33 SB.. This isn't Clayton Kershaw that the Nationals will be facing and I expect the top of the lineup; guys like Trea Turner, Jayson Werth, and Daniel Murphy to make their presence shown in this very important game. Washington is great value in this matchup as they are the home underdog. Make Washington your MLB pick.
