Indians vs. Blue Jays

The Cleveland Indians swept the Boston Red Sox right out of the playoffs and now the Tribe looks towards an AL Pennant and possible World Series date. Let’s check out their chances and if they should be included in our MLB picks.

Next Up – Toronto!

The Cleveland Indians will have to stifle the vaunted Blue Jays' lineup if they have any hopes of ending a World Series drought that has lasted since 1948. Imagine if the Indians do get by the Jays and then defeat their National League rival, it would give Cleveland two world championships within months of each other. Is it possible Cleveland is the newest Titletown? Hard to believe for a city that has knocked for decades but there is a very real possibility that it could happen.

Terry Francona has an uncanny ability to get his charges to rally around the flag and believe that anything is possible. This season's Cleveland edition ended the regular season in the top 10 in the four major offensive categories: 5th in runs scored (777), 6th in batting average (.262), 8th in on-base percentage (.329) and 9th in slugging percentage (.430). In addition, the Tribe ranked 7th in team ERA (3.84) and held opposition hitters to a .243 batting average, ranking them 5th in the league, trailing Toronto by one one-hundredth of a point.

The irony here is that the Indians will be facing a team much like themselves which is reflected in the season series between the two with the Indians claiming a 4-3 advantage. This could very well boil down to Cleveland's home field advantage as the Indians boasted one of the very best records when playing in front of the fan friendlies. Yet, as good as their 53-28 home record is, it happens to be identical to the Texas Rangers whom the Blue Jays swept, notching two of their three wins on the road in Arlington, Texas.
