Cubs Players celebrate another win

Sunday, September 11, 2016 4:30 PM GMT

As we hit the home stretch of the 2016 MLB Season, this is crunch time in the MLB and we'll be taking a look at a couple of the late games as we seek to provide the betting public the MLB Picks of the Day for Sunday.

Chicago Cubs vs Houston Astros

Chicago Has It Locked Up
The Chicago Cubs (90-51) have had such a spectacular season, that they've practically 'lapped the field' as they've been the best team in baseball. This was a team that was listed at 91 1/2 wins where future betting is concerned at the beginning of the season and today should be their 91st victory of the season with still 3 weeks remaining in the season. With all of that said, 'judgment day' will come in the post-season as this is a squad that hasn't won a World Series in over 100 years!

Tonight, the Cubbies square off against a Houston Astros (75-67) squad that will have to work hard to make a wild-card spot as there is a cluster of teams ahead of them. Their hitting is spectacular, but good pitching wins games and that's where the Astros downfall is. The Cubs pitching staff alone has 3 starting pitchers that could be an ace on the Astros pitching staff. Point being; Houston wins with their offense and that means guys like Jose Altuve, Geroge Springer. Evan Gattis, and Carlos Correa. This is a very deep lineup and is very lethal. One thing which has hurt the Astros as of late has been the decline of superstar, Jose Altuve.

No Altuve, No Win
For most of the season, Jose Altuve has been hitting around the .350 to .360 mark. Lately, he's been slumping mightily. This is still the American League's leading hitter at .339, but in the month of September, Altuve is hitting just .167. In order for Houston to win, Jose Altuve must play well as he set's the tone for the rest of the lineup.

Altuve has been injured, but is ready to play tonight and we can possibly see him break out of his slump on national television at home. For the season, Altuve has 22 HR, 92 RBI, and an OBP% of .401. I always say that people focus on the batting average when-on-base percentage is much more important. Jose Altuve has been a master at getting on base and also being a threat on the basepath with 27 stolen bases. Look for Houston to come out strong in this game after a 2-1 victory over the Cubbies yesterday.

Jake Arrieta
Houston will have the unenviable task of facing last season NL Cy Young winner in Jake Arrieta. Although Arrieta hasn't pitched as good as he did last season, he's still on his way to a 20 win season and is still a very imposing figure. Combine Arrieta's pitching with an offense that possesses two of the best hitters in the league in Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and this Chicago Cubs team is a tough team to beat.

While Houston need's this game more, Arrieta is pitching and we're siding with the Cubbies as our MLB Pick.

San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Not the Same Greinke
Every time that Zack Greinke (12-5 ,4.54 ERA) takes the mound, I always think that he's going to revert back to his form of last season in which he was the runner-up for the Cy Young Award to Jake Arrieta, but Greinke has put forth some really awful performances despite a 14-5 record. When a pitcher is 14-5 and possesses a 4.54 ERA, this mean's that he's receiving a ton of run support and that's somewhat surprising being that the Arizona Diamondbacks are an underachieving baseball team at 58-83.

This afternoon, the D'Backs face a desperate baseball team in the San Francisco Giants (76-65). The Giants look to keep their playoff hopes alive, but this afternoon's starting pitching matchup isn't very favorable to them as they send out Matt Moore (9-11, 4.14 ERA). Moore is also coming off of disastrous start in a 6-0 loss to Colorado in which he allowed 6 runs on 5 hits in 2 2/3 innings at Coors Field. The pressure is on Moore as the Giants don't possess the most intimidating offense in the MLB.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have lost 5 games in a row and it will be up to Zack Greinke to stop the bleeding. Thus far in this series, the Giants have outscored the Diamondbacks 18-9. In yesterday's game, the Giants pounded out 19 hits en route to an 11-3 victory.

Hunter Pence
The injury bug has plagued Hunter Pence all season long, but Pence is back and on fire. He's 10 for his last 13 at-bats and homered in yesterday's ball game. Pence is also hitting .389 with 3 HR and 5 RBI in the month of September. Combine Pence's hot hitting with the consistency of Buster Posey and this 1-2 punch could give Zack Greinke some problems.

The Giants should be the play here, but I'm going to fade them and side with Greinke one more time as good pitching is the key to winning.
