Colorado Rockies

Our MLB handicapping professional previews Monday’s game between Tampa Bay and Colorado. Go inside to read this insightful betting article concluded with an MLB pick.

Tampa Bay Rays vs Colorado Rockies
The Rays and Rockies will begin a three-game series on Monday night at Coors Field in Denver. The opening pitch is slated for 8:40 PM ET. This will be the first meeting between these teams since 2013. Current MLB betting odds has Colorado listed as a -129 money line favorite, and the posted total is 11.5 at Bookmaker.

Starting Pitchers
Veteran southpaw Drew Smyly is scheduled to be on the mound for Tampa Bay this evening. Smyly is 6-11 in his team starts this year with a lofty 5.47 ERA. He's exhibited horrible form over his last three starts, going 0-3 while posting a large 9.09 ERA and 2.04 WHIP. Smyly has surrendered an alarming 20 home runs in his 17 starts, and that's significant for a couple of reasons. First of all, he'll be pitching at Coors Field where home runs are served up more than Pepsi on a 90-degree day. Secondly, Colorado is 21-10 (.677) since 2015 when facing starting pitchers that allow 1 or more home runs per start.

Colorado will go with a southpaw of their own. Rookie Tyler Anderson will make just his 7th career MLB start. He's more than held his own thus far, evidenced by a stellar 3.03 ERA, and that includes an imposing 2.04 ERA through 4 starts at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Anderson has issued only 6 walks in his eight starts this year. That's good news for Colorado, considering Tampa Bay is a miserable 8-24 in 2016 when facing pitchers averaging 1.75 or less walks per start.

Rays Road Woes
Tampa Bay will look to end a 10-game road losing streak tonight. Unfortunately for Rays backers, the road hasn't been the only place that their team has struggled. Sunday's 5-2 home win over Baltimore halted an 8-game losing streak. Additionally, Tampa Bay has gone an atrocious 4-24 over the course of its last 28 games. The Rays have been offensively anemic during their last seven games, verified by an insipid .270 OBP, and .611 OPS.

Uninspiring Rockies
As per usual, Colorado games rarely lack excitement, and especially so at the launching pad called Coors Field. Colorado home games have produced a combined average of 13.0 runs per game. The Rockies have been a key contributor to that plethora of runs being scored, evidenced by a massive .882 OPS at Coors. Regrettably for them, opponents have also collected a sizable .849 OPS in games played in Denver. As a result, the Rockers are an unglamorous 20-22 at home thus far.

Final Take and Pick
It would be extremely difficult for me to wager on Tampa Bay in their current state. I would require a special set of circumstances in order to do so. That clearly won't be the case for me on Monday, especially when considering tonight's starting pitching matchup. I'll be going with the home favorite for one of my MLB picks.
