Close The Week In Style With Sunday's MLB Picks Of The Day

Sundays are usually reserved for pitchers in the back of the rotation, but we have some aces pitching. Will this come into play as we provide our MLB Picks of the Day?

New York Mets at Colorado Rockies - Low Score at Coors?
These night games have displayed some frigid temperatures for Mid-May, but this is Denver. This hasn't been a good situation for the best pitching staff in the majors in the New York Mets, but I think all of that changes this afternoon when Jacob deGrom (3-1, 2.12 ERA) takes the rubber for New York. As we know, the total is always placed in double digits and my Coors Field rule will be in effect as it's been good to me in the past.

When there's above average pitchers (not just .500 pitchers) pitching at Coors, I tend to lean towards the under on MLB odds, and when the pitchers are poor, I take the over (depending on the pitchers-It can't be Zack Greinke with a losing record). Today's game sets up well as Tyler Chatwood (4-3, 3.09) has also pitched well for a Rockies team that has handled the Mets, but will eventually decline. The weather should also be warmer as this is not a night game and that will favor New York. Look for deGrom to pitch well this afternoon as he's the backbone of this Mets pitching staff.

The Mets bats have went ice cold in their 3 losses to Colorado has the Rockies have outscored the Mets 17-6 in the three games and a team the caliber of New York doesn't want to get swept by a wind-aided team such as Colorado.

Look for a Yoenis Cespedes, Neil Walker, or even possibly a slumping Curtis Granderson (6 HR, 11 RBI, .200 BA) to go yard as these have been the Mets big boppers.

Neil Walker's batting average has tailed off and he isn't hitting .400 like Daniel Murphy, but he's managed 10 home runs already (one being last night) and this was unexpected because he's not a big-time home run hitter. Jacob deGrom is fairly unstoppable and look for him to stop the bleeding for New York as they are the better baseball team.

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers - Good Pitching Wins Games
I always provide an MLB pick for the Sunday Night Baseball game, because it's the only action going on at that time period and it provides the better a chance to either add to their winnings or get back some of their losses. Make tonight a "small bet" as it's not on top of my list.

With poor or average pitching at best, the St. Louis Cardinals don't find themselves in their usual spot on top of the National League Central Division. They're not even in 2nd place. The Chicago Cubs have taken over and now they're the kings of the division. Not only that, the Cardinals are having trouble lately losing their last 2 games to the Dodgers.

As stated earlier, pitching is the main reason why St. Louis is just 19-18, but their starting lineup needs some shaking up; possibly an addition to the team as Matt Holiday (6 HR, 19 RBI, .264 BA) and Matt Carpenter (7 HR, 25 RBI, .256 BA) have both hit for power, but have been inconsistent at times. That said, Carpenter still sets the tone as he's drawn plenty of free passes as his .380 OBP% indicates.

With players such as Aledmys Diaz off to a red hot start (6 HR, 19 RBI, .377 BA), the St. Louis Cardinals should have a better record than they do, but good pitching wins games and there will be some nights where they don't hit.

An Effective Outing For Leake
In a Mike Leake (1-3, 5.10 ERA) vs. Alex Wood (1-3, 4.58 ERA) matchup, this is a perfect example of why the Cards have had a rough season. I failed to mention that Dodgers are merely average at 20-17, but they've been winning, are in a good spot, and St. Louis has dominanted their division for years.

This game could go either way, but if St. Louis' offense can be effective, they can take satisfaction in knowing that Leake is coming off of his 1st win of the season in which he pitched 8 innings while allowing just 1 runs and 6 hits against the Angels on the road. With all of their issues, I'm going to side with the Cardinals here. They have the better offense and a pitcher with momentum and who just recently won in California to a similar team such as the Angels.
