Pitt Panthers Players Getting Ready

While plenty of the industry might think that Clemson will continue to go riding high, capper Joe Gavazzi makes an interesting NCAAF pick for Pitt, or rather the Tigers to Crash and Burn.

Pitt vs Clemson (-21) 3:30 ET ABC TV

Each week in this space, I author a PERCEPTION/REALITY game, in which the betting line is skewed in favor of one of the teams based on the PERCEPTION of the public and the linemaker. As the game plays out, you will see that the REALITY is much different. Such is the case today, in this ACC battle between Pitt and Clemson.

With a huge comeback win at Florida St. two weeks ago as the Marquee Matchup of Saturday Night Football, the Clemson Tigers could have well undergone a letdown when they hosted Syracuse in the S. Carolina version of “Death Valley.” Sure, it helped that “do everything” Syracuse QB Dungey left in the first half of the game with concussion symptoms. The final score of 54-0 in favor of the Tigers, buoyed by a (+3) net TO margin and a 565-277 yardage edge combined for the blowout win. The REALITY is that THIS IS THE WEEK FOR THE CLEMSON LETDOWN! It's “the game after the letdown game” where the team underperforms. Such will be the case today for a Clemson team, who can only see an easy road ahead (prior to the ACC Title game) with contests against this Pitt team followed by Wake Forest and S. Carolina. But, we cannot discount the sore shoulder of Tigers' QB Watson or the fact the Tigers are on a recent run of 6-10 ATS when laying double digits. They certainly will not be threatened after watching game films of Pitt's 51-28 loss at Miami last week.

Following the Panthers' 28-7 home victory over Villanova to start the season, every Panther opponent has scored 27 or more points against them, for an average of 36 PPG. That's clearly not what Panther backers were buying when they hired away former Michigan St. DC Narduzzi to continue the solid history of Panthers' success on the defensive side of the field. After all, 8 RS allowed just 360 YPG last year. On offense, however, Pitt has surprisingly outperformed expectations. Behind RB Connor, Pitt has had 6 running games of more than 200 yards. That goes a long way toward shortening the game. The 23 point loss at Miami was an aberration, as the other Panther losses have been by 7 at Oklahoma St., 1 at N. Carolina and 3 to VA Tech. No reason they can't play just as competitively against a Clemson team, who is in letdown mode and has a QB with an ailing wing. I invite you to put the College Football ODDS in your favor and join me in my College Football PICK on Pitt this afternoon.
