Johnny Manziel -9/2
Manziel has already climbed the mountain top and has a ticket waiting for him in the NFL.
In his way will be a tough defending champion in Alabama. Bama has dominated football for the last couple of years, but Johnny Football and the Aggies managed to knock off the top team last season, 29-24 and beat Landry Jones and Oklahoma convincingly in the Cotton Bowl by 4 touchdowns. Manziel is a double threat that can run and throw the football. In order for someone to take the Heisman away from him they’re going to have a near perfect season.
Braxton Miller 13/2
Miller led the Ohio State Buckeyes to an undefeated season last year, but they were bowl-ineligible and unable to compete for the BCS Title. Is it possible that OSU and head coach Urban Meyer go undefeated for a 2nd consecutive season? The answer will be up to Braxton Miller. Miller didn’t put up huge numbers passing, but he was an effective running quarterback and a key player to Ohio State’s success.
The Value Plays
A.J. McCarron 10/1
At these odds, McCarron is great value. He led the Crimson Tide to the BCS Championship last season and was nearly perfect in doing so in the process. McCarron threw for nearly 3000 yards with 30 TD’s and 3 INT’s. If he has a repeat performance of last season, he’s a definite threat to take down Manziel.
Aaron Murray 12/1
Murray is a pure passer for the Georgia Bulldogs that has gotten better as his career has went on. He lacks a little height but is a pure passer. If Georgia gets on a run, Murray can be taken into consideration. He’s definitely a fantasy league favorite, but will he be a favorite with the Heisman judging? That’s another question.
Marquise Lee 12/1
If Matt Barkley were still quarterbacking USC, I would put Lee towards the top of the list, but being that there’s an inexperienced quarterback in South California, I don’t think that Lee will be targeted enough efficiently to be a factor.
USC also had a disappointing season last year and can’t compete with the Alabama’s of college football. In the NFL, this guy will be drafted very high, but we’re talking about the Heisman Trophy Award.
Player To Watch
Teddy Bridgewater 12/1
This is a player with major talent, toughness, and heart combined. Not many quarterbacks can play with a broken hand. Bridgewater was never given enough credit for his ability as he played at a Big East school in Louisville until the Cardinals upset the Florida Gators as double digit underdogs in the Sugar Bowl 33-23.
Bridgewater is a wildcard because he possesses all of the talent to be a real stud, however I don’t think he’s ready to take down the Heisman Trophy this season.
Barring injury, this is Manziel’s award to lose. That said, I think that A.J. McCarron is a major contender and if you were looking for value, you could choose McCarron as your Hiesman college football pick. If Marquise Lee had a top rated quarterback, he’d be near the top of my list, but that isn’t the case.
