There are six games on the NHL Sunday slate, and half of those games offer nice value. Here are those top three selections.
There are a half-dozen games to choose from on the NHL odds on Sunday, and three of the games appear to offense good value opportunities. Here are those NHL picks.
Washington Capitals @ Chicago Blackhawks
NHL Odds: Blackhawks -150
The Washington Capitals are coming off a couple of efforts where we’ve seen warning signs. Although they beat the lowly New York Islanders on Tuesday night, they actually had to dig out of a 3-0 second period hole only to win their way in a shooutout. On Friday, they left Winnipeg on the wrong side of a 3-2 result.
The truth is that Washington isn’t a good road team and trusting them in Chicago against the Blackhawks, who are an excellent home, is not ideal.
The Blackhawks are 24-7-5 at home and the key seems to be that both of their goaltenders perform better at the United Center. As for the Capitals, they are just 13-23 on the road and the opposite seems true for them. They allow just 2.39 goals per game at home compared to 3.17 on the road. Bet the Blackhawks.
NHL Picks: Blackhawks
Nashville Predators @ Anaheim Ducks
NHL Odds: Ducks -120
The Anaheim Ducks are team that we’ve had pegged pretty well over the last couple of months. We rode them quite a bit when they were hot and we’ve faded them just as much as they’ve gone into the tank.
The Ducks have now lost seven of their last 10 games and it doesn’t figure to get any easier on Sunday. One of the main problems has been that goaltender Jonas Hiller has been worked non-stop since January 10th, which means that Sunday will be his 32nd straight start.
Hiller definitely hasn’t been bad over the last two months but he’s played a touch worse than in January. In that month, he went 7-2-1 with a 1.55 GAA. Since then, he’s 11-8-4 with a 2.14 GAA. When you combine that with the Ducks offensive woes – nine goals in their last five games – and the difference becomes significant.
The Predators did play last night in Los Angeles and after a highly-contested affair, this one should be a bit easier on them. They’ve been one of the best teams in the NHL over the last couple of months and they are more than capable of taking advantage of a fading Ducks squad.
NHL Picks: Predators
Phoenix Coyotes @ Edmonton Oilers
NHL Odds: Coyotes -115
The Phoenix Coyotes have struggled in March with just two wins in nine games but Sunday offers them a good opportunity. The Edmonton Oilers had been struggling mightily themselves until wins over the Columbus Blue Jackets and fatigued Calgary Flames turned their tide but we’re not sold.
The Coyotes play well versus Edmonton as they have won four straight versus the Oilers and goaltender Mike Smith has a good track record against them. Smith has a 1.67 GAA against the Oilers so far this season in three starts.
On the flip side, Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk has not fared well against the Coyotes as he’s posted a 3.42 GAA in those three contests.
With the Coyotes in the playoff hunt in need of points, look for them to want this one a little more and get back on track.
