The beginning of the college basketball betting season is
always rife with mismatches and Wednesday’s contest between the Purdue
Boilermakers and Alcorn State Braves is one of them.
The Braves are one of the worst teams in the nation
whereas the Boilermakers are an NCAA tournament team and are have big
expectations for March 2011. This one won’t be close.

The Alcorn State
Braves Can Win Because…:
There is a gigantic spread in their favor.
If the conversation is winning outright, the Braves have
no shot but covering a large spread is possible. The Boilermakers were expected
to be a Final Four contender this year, but that was until they lost one of
their big three in the second practice of the year: senior forward Robbie
With Hummel out, all of these early non-conference games
will be bench-tests for the Boilermakers depth. They need to find someone to
replace Hummel’s production and if the Boilermakers get out to a big lead, the
focus of the game will be exactly that and not running up the score. This could
work in Alcorn State’s favor but admittedly, that’s a stretch.
Boilermakers Can Win Because…:
They are significantly better than Alcorn State in
virtually every facet of the game.
Just to give you an idea of where Alcorn State is at,
they have played two games this year and they have lost both games by an average
of 26 points per game (against Texas A&M and Houston).
Meanwhile, the Boilermaker hammered Howard in their
opener 74-40. The Braves had just two wins all of last season whereas Purdue
had just six losses.
But the bigger issue here – regarding the spread – is the
defense on both teams. Both Texas A&M and Houston scored 88 points apiece
but Alcorn State averaged 62 a game. Purdue has better weapons than those teams
– including all Big Ten performers E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson – and
that’s going to be a consistent problem for the Braves all night long.
Outlook & Basketball
Of all of Purdue’s opponents this year, the Braves are
the ones with the lowest RPI from last year. They were a pathetic 346th
in the RPI last year and won only two games – none on the road.
The Boilermakers are being discredited by a number of
pundits after the loss of Hummel and these games still mean something to them.
They want to prove that the expectations have not dropped even without a key
The Braves are going to get tomahawk chopped in this one.
Bet Purdue on the spread.
