Find out which college basketball picks catch our eye for tonight's Sweet 16 action.
Yesterday was ruled by underdogs as three of the four pups
cashed in at the NCAA Basketball betting shops. The only favorite to cover was Ohio State, who beat
Cincinnati by 15.
These are the college basketball matchups that I have chosen to add to my NCAA Basketball Picks tonight.
Baylor (29-7 SU, 14-15 ATS) vs. Xavier (23-12 SU, 13-18-2
Tipoff at 7:15 PM EST
I have already provided my pick for this game's spread, but now lets take a look at the total.
Whoever wins this one faces the survivor of
Kentucky/Indiana, with most people assuming it'll be the Wildcats that get that
spot in the Elite Eight.
The Bears are the betting odds favorites to get there and are handing out
six points to the Musketeers. The total can be found at 142.5, with 142 also
available at certain sportsbooks.
This UNDER play is based on Xavier primarily. The Musketeers
have been playing solid defense, allowing 64.2 PPG over their last five. They
excelled throughout the season at 3-point defense, ranking in the top 25 (30.5
percent), and that sort of perimeter D is going to come handy against Brady
Heslip and the Bears.
Everyone saw what Heslip did in the last round, draining
nine threes to send Colorado packing. Assuming Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons can
continue to play suffocating defense, there's no chance Heslip pulls off such a
Xavier is not a 3-point shooting team. Instead the
Musketeers are going to try and win this game in the trenches with Kenny Frease
as they did against Lehigh, while also hoping Holloway can have success driving
into the lane. They'll try and rack up lengthy possessions to keep the ball out
of Baylor's hands as much as possible.
This free college basketball pick comes down to whether or not Xavier can set a
tempo that they're comfortable playing at. They managed to do so in the first
two rounds and I'm banking on them making this one a slugfest once more.
PICK: UNDER 142.5
Kansas (29-6 SU, 17-16-1 ATS) vs. N.C. State (24-12 SU,
Tipoff at 10:17 PM EST
The Jayhawks, one of two remaining Big 12 teams in the Big
Dance, are favored by as many as 8.5 points for their Sweet 16 clash with a
surprising N.C. State team.
John Ryan has provided us with his pick in favor of the Jayhawks, but I am liking the ACC contenders to cover.
The Wolfpack are an amazing 14-3 ATS in games away from home
this season and are on an impressive 7-0-1 ATS run heading into tonight. That's
surely going to attract a lot of sports bettors, but that's not the only reason I like
the underdogs to cash.
I love N.C. State's balance. All five of their starters
averaged in double figures during the regular season and all but one reached
double-digits in the second round triumph over Georgetown. In that win over the
Hoyas, the Wolfpack shot only 37.0 percent from the floor and 61.3 percent from
the line, but still managed to grind out the win.
This is a team that also has both the speed and muscle to
keep Thomas Robinson relatively in check. C.J. Leslie, a lean but athletic
forward, has been terrific, averaging 18.3 PPG and 9.6 RPG over his last 10
contests, and Richard Howell, the more bruising big man in the paint, was good
for 9.1 RPG during the regular season.
So while the Wolfpack may not be the most experienced team
left in the field, they certainly have great chemistry and know how to get down
and dirty to get the result they want. I think they easily cover the number
PICK: N.C. State Wolfpack +8.5
