The 2013-2014 Florida Gators will be a talented team highlighted by big-time incoming recruits. The Gators say goodbye to their top 3 scorers in Kenny Boynton, Mike Rosario, and Erik Murphy.
Florida took it to the Elite 8 last season as they ran into
a buzz saw in the name of Trey Burke and the Michigan Wolverines. Florida was
embarrassed 79-59, but they won’t have to worry about Burke this season as the
NBA is too tempting to pass up for most stars that want to showcase their
talent on the grand stage. This fact should help those basketball picks for Gators backers.
The players that do return are ones that hope to polish up
their skills in hopes of making it to the NBA or possibly make a name overseas.
Forward Will Yeguette (5.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and guard Scottie
Wilbekin (9.1 ppg, 5 apg) are two of these types of basketball players.
Florida didn’t have any distinct offensive stars, but
Yeguette came up big in the Elite 8 game against Michigan in which he shot 5
for 5 from the field with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Expect Yeguette to raise
his game to the next level this season as he’ll be basically “thrown into the
Wilbekin on the other hand, played major minutes in the Big
Dance and delivered in each game except for the loss to Michigan. He’ll definitely
look to take a leadership role in his senior season under head coach Billy
5 Star Special
ESPN Top 10 recruit, Kasey Hill, saw a successful program
with some holes and seized the day by signing with the Gators. Hill is ranked
number 10 amongst recruits by ESPN for 2013. The 6 foot point guard out of the
Bronx, N.Y. is ranked number 2 in the nation at the guard position.
Hill is a true point guard that can beat his opponent off
the dribble and also setup other players on the team.
Hill will either split duties with the defensive-minded
Wilbekin or they’ll share time on the court together. This is a huge feather in
Billy Donovan’s cap as he continues to run a top-level program.
Right behind Hill at the number 12 position in ESPN’s top
100 recruits is power forward, Chris Walker. Walker will be taking his talents
to Florida, not too far away from home. The Native Floridian might need to add
a little bulk at 6 foot 10 and only 195 pounds.
Walker has blazing speed and can provide much needed offense
for this squad as he can hit the straight up catch and shoot.
Along with senior Patric Young (10.1 point, 6.3 rebounds),
this tandem can form one of the better front lines in the SEC Conference.
Although most high school players go running to Kentucky in
hopes of a one year trip to the NBA, Florida’s storied history behind head
coach Billy Donovan carries a lot of weight and landing two 5 star recruits
will be a major factor in the upcoming season.
Odds To Win the
Florida should have a huge season, but at +2200 NCAAB odds to win it
all, they’re not ready to win the National Championship unless they meet a
Cinderella team that snuck into the Elite 8 or possible
Final 4. The freshman should make an immediate impact.
