Marlins were gutted 9-1 yesterday, despite the return of their star, Hanley Rameriz. The Marlins have dropped four straight games and 14 of the their last 16 games. The road for the Marlins doesn't get easier today.
They face the Phillies in a double-header, with the night cap coming against Phillies ace Roy Halladay (9-3, 2.39 ERA). The Phillies enter the twin billing on a four game winning streak, in which they have exploded for 27 runs.
The first game of the double header is where the Marlins can get their bats going again, as they face the Phillies pitcher, Kyle Kendrick (3-4, 3.47 ERA). Kyle, in his last three starts, is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA and has let up nine runs in eleven innings. Kyle is 5-2 with a 5.36 ERA for his career vs. the Marlins. The Marlins, who have hit Kyle's pitching well over their careers, are Gabby Sanchez .556 avg. 1 HR., Mike Stanton .400 1 HR., and Chris Coghlan .429 avg.
The Marlins counter today with a rookie, Elih Villanueve who is making his major league debut. The right-handed pitcher had a record of 4-5 with a 5.23 ERA this year, in Triple-A for New Orleans. The rookie might have a rough go of it today vs. the Phillies hot bats, but you never know how a team will play when they have never seen a pitcher before. The Phillies have hit right-handed pitching pretty well in their last 10 games, with a team batting average of .246 and a .256 avg at home this season.
The betting odds opened the game at -165 ml for the favored Phillies, but it has fallen to a -156 ml even with the public money backing the Phillies 60%. The total opened at 9 and shot up to 9.5 at every betting shop, where it remains.
Sharp money is moving that line down and if Florida has a shot at not getting swept in this series, it would be this game. The over 9.5 is the only play for me, as both pitchers will give up runs today.
Game 2 at 7:05 pm at Citizens Bank Park, in Philadelphia
The second game will be a great pitching match-up, between Roy Halladay (RHP) and Anibal Sanchez (RHP). Roy, over his last three starts, has been great going 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA. Roy's for his Career vs the Marlins, is 4-3 with a 2.13 ERA. The Marlins only have a team average of .230 in last 10 games vs. right-handed pitching and a .250 avg (RHP) away from home for the season. The Marlins hitters who might have a chance of hitting Roy tonight are Gaby Sanchez .357 avg., Chris Coghlan .333 avg. Roy should be able to handle the rest of the Marlins line-up pretty easily, on his way to a N.L. leading 10 wins on the season.
Sanchez is coming off a impressive May, where he had three shut outs (2xWash, 1xS.F.). Sanchez did run into a hot Milwaukee team last week, that got to him for 8 hits and 5 runs in 5 innings pitched, but it was his only hick-up in his last three games and he still managed a record of 2-0 with a 4.58 ERA. Anibal is 6-1 with a 3.06 ERA for the season and 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA on the road this season. Sanchez has got pounded by the Phillies over his career with a record of 3-7 and a 5.65 ERA. Ryan Howard has beaten him up over his career with a .300 average and 2 home runs. The other Phillies that have feasted off Sanchez are, Rollins 364 avg., Utley .440 avg., Ruiz .333 avg., and Polanco .500 avg..
The game opened up at -185 ml at most baseball betting shops, but 5Dimes has it at -184 ml. The games over/under opened at 7.5 but knocked right down to 7 quickly and that is where it sits right now.
Phillies ml -185 if you don't mind the juice but the RL is my play considering how well the Phillies stars have handled Sanchez in the past. The over/under is set at 7, if it was at 7.5 I would give the under a shot with that half run being the difference, but since it's at 7, I would play the over 7, but for me it's a no play. The RL or ml is the safest bet in my opinion. A interesting Prop for the game is no runs scored in the 1st inning with the two pitchers wanting to get off to good starts vs each other.
Game 3 at 7:05 pm Tomorrow night ( June 16,) at Citizens Bank Park, in Philadelphia
Tomorrows game, Cliff Lee (6-5,3.41 Era) vs. Javier Vazquez (3-6, 7.09 ERA). The Marlins are about to get rid of Vazquez, because he has been pitching horrible this season. The Phillies will roll in this game and will eat Vazquez alive for the win. Ryan Howard has a career average of .333 with 3 Hrs in only 15 at bats off Vazquez and should lead the charge for the Phillies. The Marlins who hit Cliff Lee well are, Omar Infante .308 avg., Hanley only has 3 at bats but has a .667 average. Cliff will out pitch Vazquez for the win and a chance at a series sweep if they take the two games today in the Double header.
