The league's worst team, the Chicago White Sox (13-22) face the AL West leading Los Angeles Angels (20-15) on Monday, 10:05 pm ET in Anaheim, California. The White Sox are trying to get something going as they're looking for their 3rd straight win.
Times have been tough for the Chicago White Sox
, who were expected to win their division and be major contenders in the American League. They haven't lived up to the hype thus far. Acquisitions that were expected to give the Sox an edge have totally disappointed their team but there's plenty of time to turn it around as Chicago is only a little more than 1/5 into the season.
In their last meeting, the White Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2. Chicago broke the game open with 3 runs in the top of the 10th to get the victory. Paul Konerko who's been playing well, went 5 for 5. Sergio Santos was the winning pitcher (1-0).
In the Los Angeles Angels
last game, they defeated the AL Central
leading Cleveland Indians 6-5. Cleveland took the lead in the top of the 8th, scoring 2 runs to make it 4-3 but the Angels came back in the bottom of the 8th with 3 runs, sparked by Erick Aybar's double the knocked in 2 runs and the winning run to get the victory.
Now the division leading Angels host baseball's worst team, the Chicago White Sox. Can the White Sox keep the momentum going and turn their season around?
The White Sox send Edwin Jackson (2-4, 4.98) to the mound and he'll be facing right hander Ervin Santana (1-3, 4.43). Both pitchers have had subpar seasons but have pitched well in their last outings.
Jackson lost a heartbreaker as Minnesota defeated the White Sox 1-0. He gave up only 1 run and 6 hits in 8 innings pitched.
In Santana's last outing, he pitched 4 innings of nearly perfect baseball against the Boston Red Sox, not giving up a run or a hit. He walked 1 and struck out 7 batters.Veteran strength
Paul Konerko is having another spectacular season for the White Sox. He's coming off of a perfect 5 for 5 game and has been a leader all season. He leads the Sox in home runs (8), runs batted in (27), and batting average (.323). His production is needed because he's on a fairly weak offensive squad. The White Sox are hitting just .243 as a team. Konerko is hitting 11 for 22 (.500) in his last 7 games. He hasn't fared well against Santana for his career but he's played well against the Angels. He has 22 HR, 95 RBI and is batting .294 in 110 career games against the Angels. Most of Konerko's power has come at home but he's hit .342 on the road this season. After a game like the one that he had against Seattle on Sunday, look for Paul Konerko to provide some production for the White Sox's offense on Monday night.Better late than never
Alex Rios is on fire for the White Sox. He's been under the Mendoza line for much of the season but in one week, he's raised his average from .155 to .213. In his last 6 games, Rios is hitting 11 for 24 with 6 runs scored. Rios also has 2 HR and 3 RBI in that period of time. He's totally turned his season around and has had major success against Ervin Santana. For his career, he's 6 for 14 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI against Santana.
The White Sox will be looking to win their 3rd straight off of the hot hitting of Paul Konerko and Alex Rios. Both players are playing exceptional baseball lately.Table setter
Erick Aybar is the leadoff hitter in the Angels lineup and he's hitting like a "number 1 player", power excluded. He knocked in the winning runs on Sunday to give the halos the victory. Aybar has yet to hit a home run this year but he's done just about everything else that a leadoff hitter should do. He's hitting .356 on the season with 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 8 stolen bases.(in 21 games). He's currently on a 7 game hitting streak and has hit safely in 18 out of the 21 games played this year. The Angels should feel very secure in the leadoff spot with a player that's practically gotten a hit in almost every game this season. Erick Aybar has also had good success against Edwin Jackson in limited time. He's 3 for 6 with a double and 1 RBI. Look for Aybar to continue the hot hitting.Hometown hero
Anaheim, California native Mark Trumbo is playing very well for his hometown team. Along with Howie Kendrick, Trumbo gives the Angels some pop, leading the team with 6 home runs. Along with that, he has 17 RBI and is batting a respectable .274 for the season. Trumbo has been coming on strong as of late. Since April 24th, he's increased his batting average by 49 points. Trumbo has a 6 game hitting streak and is has hitting 10 for 23 with 3 HR and 8 RBI in those 6 games. The White Sox will have to procede with caution because Trumbo is a real threat at the moment. He's only hitting .211 for his career against Chicago but how can you discount the amazing numbers that he's put up over his last 6 games?
The Angels have a lot of capable hitters that aren't household names but all they keep doing is producing and winning. This is why they stand on top of the AL West
Regardless of the White Sox modest 2 game winning streak, the Angels seem to have a decisive edge. However, if the game is close, it could mark trouble for Los Angeles. Closer Jordan Walden has 3 blown saves in his last 3 attempts. The numbers look good statistically at 0-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 6 saves, but Walden's recent history puts up a big red flag. What to expect
The White Sox have a little confidence coming into this game and are better than their record says. Paul Konerko is a legitimate superstar and is a threat to Los Angeles everytime that he step's to the plate but the Angels are the better team at the moment. They have a deep lineup and have been playing well. I would be slightly worried if the game came down to Walden but that won't stop me from taking Los Angeles at the MLB betting
