Thanks to a multi-homer night from Vernon Well the Angels took the opener of their series against. Tonight they’ll try to make up even more ground in the division race when they battle the Mariners at Safeco Park.
Anaheim ace Jered Weaver (7-4, 2.24), goes for the Angels. Doug Fister (3-7, 3.40) will throw for Seattle. The sportsbooks opened the baseball betting with Weaver and the Angels -115, now at -145 and the total holding at 6.5.
Last night, The Angels held on for a 6-3 win at Safeco. Dan Haren worked 6 +innings to improve his record to 6-4. Vernon Wells had the big bat with two hits, two RBI’s and while improving his average to .194. With pitching bust Scott Kazmire about to be released, costing them $25 million dollars over the next few years, it’s imperative for Tony Reagins to get production from Wells.
Weavers been wicked!
He started the season at 6-0 without a loss and finished with an earned run record of 'under' 2.00 for the first 30 days but since he could have earned three or four runs additional victories with any type of run support.
Weaver (7-4, 2.24) ranks third in the majors in ERA, is tied for third in victories and fourth with 90 strikeouts. The right-hander has a 3.29 ERA while limiting opponents to .219 at the plate over his last eight games, but has just a 1-4 record to show for it as the Angels (32-36) have backed him with 10 total runs.
The Angels right-hander has earned less runs of support this season than any other pitcher and is 0-3 with a 3.36 ERA. He’s faced Seattle one time this season and was the losing pitcher on May 18 despite allowing just three runs in six innings.
Doug Fister is now in his third full season in Seattle where he’s got a combined 12-25 record. He’s pitched well in his last three starts allowing a 4.03 ERA, With 20 hits and 11 runs allowed.
Offensively Fister shouldn’t expect much from the Seattle offense as he tries to break a personal three game winning streak. Last night Seattle was stymied by Dan Haren who allowed eight hits including two to Ichiro who is still hitting a career worst .262 average.
It as smiles all around as Wells high fived his teammate in the locker room afterwards. He went 2 for 4 and is now hitting 6 for 15 with one home run and seven runs scored in his last four games an average of .400.
Neither team is playing well right now. The Angels have 11 of their 13 games and 14 of 18 to drop into fourth place in the AL West (-4.5 behind). Seattle has lost three of five and is two games behind first-place Texas.
The Angeles are 32-36 overall and 8-10 vs. Western Division teams are riding a current 2-9 streak.
The Angels are 40-18 in the last 58 meetings but 2-7 in their last nine games overall.
Seattle is 9-4 in their 13 games overall but is 21-8 in Fister’s last 29 outings
Harvey’s Take: The American League t has produced some big surprises this year like Cleveland, Kansas City and Minnesota but I think those teams will start to bottom out soon if it hasn’t already happened, Texas will probably win the West with the Angels having things just about as expected. To keep things going towards that goal I’ve got another Angels win and a low scoring game for Weaver.
