    Miss Universe Preview: The Favorites

The finale of the Miss Universe pageant is only nine days away, and betting is starting to get heavy. I wrote about a few of my favorite contestants, including Miss USA, here. With the betting odds firming up, it is time to check out the favorites.
Currently in first place is Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar, at 4-1. After last year’s fiasco, when Miss Colombia was mistakenly crowned the winner only to have to yield the crown to Miss Philippines, Colombia perhaps has the honor coming. I featured Miss Tovar in my previous post, but here is another photo. She could well be the winner:

Second in the current betting is Valeria Piazza, Miss Peru. (No relation, as far as I know, to Mike Piazza, recently voted into the Hall of Fame. Certainly no physical resemblance.)

The linked betting site lists Lenty Frans, Miss Belgium, as the number three contender at 13-2. This is puzzling as Miss Frans is not Miss Belgium in the Miss Universe contest. She recently competed for Belgium at Miss World. The actual Miss Belgium is Stephanie Geldhof, whom I also featured in my prior post. I hope those bettors aren’t wagering a lot of money. Here, once again, is Miss Geldhof:

The Miss Universe site has been revamped within the past few days. The new site is harder to navigate and includes hardly any pictures. This wouldn’t be happening if Donald Trump still owned the pageant! This is the only photo on the Miss Universe site of the fourth most heavily-bet contestant, Miss Nicaragua, Marina Jacoby:

A few moments on Google Images can improve on that portrait:

So far this year’s Miss Universe pageant hasn’t generated much news. No real scandals, no recent terrorist threats–although we did note last August that the Islamic State has threatened to bomb the pageant, which will take place in Manila. For those who don’t think much of beauty pageants: if ISIS hates them, they must have some merit.
Candidly, I don’t think this year’s field is as strong as some. That may be why bettors are heavily favoring the traditionally successful Latin American countries. Miss Puerto Rico, Brenda Jimenez, is currently number five at 8-1, which means that I inadvertently featured three of the top five in my initial roundup. Here is another photo of Miss Jimenez:

All worthy contenders, no doubt, but I still think the judges could do worse than to select Miss Guam, Muneka Joy Cruz Taisipic:

    Miss Universe 2017 Winner Predictions

Miss Universe’ official site already uploaded some of the candidate’s photos and profiles.Promising candidates already captured the interest of the fans. One of the most promising candidates this year is Miss USA Deshauna Barber. Barber actively serves in the US military and is the first one in the military to win the title.

This 27-year-old African-American beauty works directly with soldiers suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder. Barber winning the pageant is just what the world needs amidst the revival of racial discrimination in the US. US President-elect Donald Trump formerly owns the Miss Universe Organization.

Another candidate to watch out for is Miss Brazil Raissa Santana. She is the first black woman from Brazil to have won the title after 30 years. Meanwhile, Argentinian candidate, Estefania Berna, catches the eye of the public with her beauty that can be compared to last year’s 1st runner-up Miss Colombia. With her thick eyebrows and full lips, her beauty inspires a trend.

Lastly, we won’t fail to mention Miss Philippines Maxine Medina. Will she land the title Miss Universe 2017 and give her country what Colombia almost achieved; a back to back crown?

    Miss Universe 2016 Predictions

Pageants NEWS Hace 3 meses Miss Universe 2016 will be the 65th edition of the Miss Universe pageant. Pia Wurtzbach from the Philippines will crown her successor at the end of the event. Meet the favorites below!
    Miss Universe 2016 Candidates here

    Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar

Andrea definitely has big shoes to fill after Ariadna Gutierrez’s fabulous performance at Miss Universe 2015. Remember, Gutiérrez received international attention due to Miss Universe host Steve Harvey announcing her as the winner by mistake.

Andrea Tovar is the second Miss Colombia coming from the predominantly black Choco. She is currently studying Industrial Design and Photographic Image Production at the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá.

    Miss Brazil, Raissa Santana

She's the second ever black Miss Brazil. Raissa Santana attends school—majoring in marketing—and also spends time giving back to her community. She was bullied growing up, in part because of her natural hair. In an interview with Banda Portal, Santana opened up about her experience with bullying, when she was “branded as ugly" growing up. She felt she had to straighten her hair even as a young child because she was told her natural hair wasn't beautiful.

Brazil has won the Miss Universe Pageant in 1963 and 1968.

    Miss Mexico, Kristal Silva

The Miss Mexico Organization has produced two Miss Universe titles for Mexico: Miss Universe 1991 and 2010. Kristal Silva will be Mexico's representative at Miss Universe 2016 and she's already considered as a favorite.

Kristal is not a newbie to the pageant world, she won Miss Earth Mexico 2013 beauty contest and represented Mexico at the Miss Earth 2013 where she made the Top 8. The mexican beauty currently studies at Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas.

    Miss Australia, Caris Tiivel

With supermodel looks and a supermodel portfolio, Caris Tiivel is no ordinary competitor. Her international experience as a model has had travel to fashion capitals all over the world.

Australia is one of the most successful countries at the Miss Universe pageant with two crowns; Kerry Anne Wells, Miss Universe 1972 and Jenniffer Hawkins, Miss Universe 2004. Australia has bagged numerous runner-up crowns and top 10 finalists placement.

    Miss Venezuela, Mariam Habach

Under the direction of Osmel Sousa, Venezuela has accumulated more international pageant titles than any other country, including seven Miss Universe winners.

Mariam is a dental student at the José Antonio Páez University. The beauty queen has been dreaming of becoming Miss Venezuela since she was little girl. Her father is syrian while her mother is italian.

    Miss Philippines, Maxine Medina

Filipinos are hoping that Wurtzbach’s successor will be the fourth Filipino to win Miss Universe.

The Philippines, through BPCI, has produced three Miss Universe winners (Gloria Diaz in 1969, Margarita Moran in 1973 and Pia Wurtzbach in 2015) and four Miss International winners (Aurora Pijuan in 1970, Melanie Marquez in 1979, Lara Quigaman in 2005 and Bea Santiago in 2013).

When she was a child Maxine Medina dreamed of becoming an interior designer. Armed with this dream, she took up Interior Design at both De La Salle-College of St. Benilde and the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID) and later graduated. The filipina beauty also works as a model.

    Miss Indonesia, Kezia Warouw

Indonesia made the Top 15 at Miss Universe the past three years. Kezia Warouw is a programmer, graduated from Information Technology Faculty. Her next goal is to make an Android application about all the 34 provinces of Indonesia.

    Miss France, Iris Mittenaere

In 2015 Flora Coquerel represented France at Miss Universe 2015 where she placed 3rd Runner-up, which represents the second highest French placement ever in Miss Universe.

Iris is in her fifth year at the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the University of Lille II. After completing her reign as Miss France, she aspires to continue her education and become a surgeon dentist. In the national pageant, she scored the highest ranking (17.5 / 20) in the general knowledge test.

    Miss Thailand, Chalita Suansane

Chalita Suansane was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2016 this summer in Bangkok. The 21-year-old Samut Prakan native won 1 million baht in cash. She is a student from Mahasarakham University.

Thailand has won the Miss Universe Pageant two times (1965 - Apasra Hongsakula & 1988 - Porntip Nakhirunkanok).
