This one is for you, Elvis. Sorry to hear that, Opie. My condolences.

I dread the day that my boy is gone. 11 years strong, but has his ups and downs. My best friend, always there to pick me up. Pets are family.

I know you will remember the good times, and Elvis had a great run. Thoughts with you, and your family brother. Rest in Peace Elvis.

My heart goes out to you and your beautiful family.

This is exactly why I won't get another dog now. My heart can't take it and while I know how much love they'd provide my son and I, the thought of him/her dying is just beyond what I can handle these days. Big hugs and kisses to you all. I can just imagine that your Elvis was as loved up, well-fed and adored as his namesake and what a lucky dog he was xo

Really appreciate all the kind words and gestures, guys. We have a great group here at SBR.

We're fine. As I mentioned, it was def time for him to go. He was just a shell of his former self. As I assume everyone is who makes it to such an advanced age. It's still crazy how attached you get to a dog though.

    Thanks again.

We love you. And when you just said you knew it was time for him to go it made me think of a woman in my suburb who is campaigning for the right to do the same as she's suffering from terminal cancer that is embarrassing her, harming her family, depriving her of dignity and leaves her in constant pain. She's one of those constantly dolled up, volunteering for every activity even if her kids aren't involved kind of mums. We can make the decision for our pets who are absolutely 100% our family members but able-minded adults can't choose the same in Australia. Your post right here just changed my thought on the whole thing. I would never want my dog Eva or your Elvis or any other animal or human to suffer needlessly yet some countries do that with humans. No more for me

Heck after reading all these posts I would not want a dog

    Too devastating at the end

I hear most pet owners will get another one down the road after the healing process

Seriously this is why I'm not getting one. My son got two fish from his grandparents for his birthday along with an aquarium that took me almost 2 fukkin hours to set up and I was convinced they'd die the next day. I prepared my child for it, had a burial site, everything. Almost three weeks later the fukkers are still going but at least when they go it just involves a flush or MAYBE a burial in the backyard. Dogs and cats rip your heart out when they die. Never again for me.

Sorry for your loss brother Opie.

Healing process is important, but do get another dog (or two) down the road. Remember no matter, how much it hurts right now for you to lose a friend, there are still millions of other homeless dogs out there, that need love, home and someone to play with. When you put your personal feelings aside and start thinking about abandoned animals, that are stuck in a tiny concrete room in a shelter, just waiting to be killed - getting another dog shouldn't even be a question.

It's been a few years and I haven't felt the urge to get another dog just yet.. Hard to replace your old buddy as it will never be the same...

I may get one soon though.. Black lab maybe.. Or a Rot mix of some sort... It all depends if I come across the opportunity and it falls in my lap, but I'm probably not gonna go searching the dog pounds/shelters or pay $300 on Craigslist for a high energy puppy that will piss and crap everywhere and keep me up all night....

Kinda like these dogs alot for some reason..

They love unconditionally. No better feeling than coming home after a day at work and being raped with kisses. Won't get that from any human. Holding my dog close today. So sorry for your loss.

The memories are great but it takes someone with great courage to jump into that again especially with a child. That life cycle isn't normal. Imagine us losing our beloved human friends every 1-18 years. It's devastating and it's exactly why so many 40 and 50 year olds talk about their childhood pet and not their today pet. IT's because they've learned to detach at that point. But kids haven't

Sad to lose a dog that is so close to your heart. I bet Elvis lived like a KING and loved you all every bit as much as you all loved him. Thats what companionship is, and you and Elvis were both lucky to have it. Take care and relish the memories

Sorry to hear man. I lost my 8 year old pug unexpectedly a little over a month ago to Lyme disease. She was like our kid. It happened so suddenly too, like she got hit with a car.
