Then there will be new youngsters on the rise.

    bumping my old Djokovic posts.

Since you posted this four years ago, I don't think he's been ranked higher than third.

del Potro was never ranked higher than fourth.

Murray was number 2 (behind Federer) in August 2009. He was 22 years old at the time.

Djoko had 5 of his 6 slams while Andy was getting 2. Rafa had 4 of his 13 slams during that time

Looks like it may never happen for Andy.

I'm not too upset about it tbh, winning slams is way more important than being #1. The whole concept of being #1 was kinda ruined when we had a succession of losers being #1 in the WTA 3-5 years ago. I guess it still somewhat has prestige in the mens' game but I'd rather win 1 slam and be #3 for the year than make 3 slam finals and win 3 Masters 1000 and be #1 for the year (random example).

It wasn't whether Murray will win a grand slam. I thought that was pretty obvious, and I said he would.

It was whether he'd be number 1. Much more difficult than winning a grand slam.

I'd probably rather win the GS, but the truth is it's more difficult to maintain excellence over a year (consistently reaching semis), than it is to win one GS tournament.

Before Federer/Nadal/Djokovic took over, you had several guys win a major without ever being number 1, and recently we've had del Potro and Murray.

I somewhat agree but seeing Wozniacki be world number 1 for basically 2 years reaching 1 grand slam semi and 0 finals in those 2 years completely discredited the whole concept of being #1 for me (and people like Federer and Serena would agree with me). Not to mention all the other series of losers we had as #1s (Ivanovic, Jankovic...) Now I understand that's the WTA and only big time guys have been #1 in the ATP in recent memory but still, to me the rankings are pretty much just what determines who gets easier draws in slams.

Yeah and he's still only 27 so I guess he has time.

Tsonga has become such a joke it's sad. Him and Berdych are the 2 biggest jokes on tour as of now.
