    http://www.smh.com.au/world/did-melania-trump-immigrate-legally-to-the-us-20160804-gqliyg.html

Apparent inconsistencies in her account of immigrating to the United States from Slovenia in the 1990s have reporters asking questions.

When Melania Trump delivered a convention speech that included plagiarised sections of an address by Michelle Obama last month, the media handled the wife of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump pretty gently.

"Nobody blames Melania for this," CNN's Chris Cuomo told viewers the day after.

Two weeks later, Melania Trump is once again under the media microscope - a position as awkward for journalists as it is for the reclusive former model.

Here's how we got to this point: After the plagiarism incident, the Huffington Post noted that a biography of Melania Trump published in April by two Slovenian journalists contains a different account of her educational history than what was listed on her official website. Trump claimed on her site to have earned a college degree in her native country, but biographers Bojan Pozar and Igor Omerza wrote that she dropped out after one year. CBS News confirmed that Trump never graduated after checking school records.

Last week, Trump took down her website, citing reasons unrelated to questions about her schooling.

Over the weekend, the New York Post published decades-old nude photos of a 25-year-old Trump and quoted a photographer who said he shot them in New York for a men's magazine in 1995. Trump claimed on her now-defunct website that she did not move to the United States until 1996.

She has said in interviews that she came to America on an H-1B work ****. If that's true, then her embellishment of academic achievements "might matter because a college degree can be an important credential for someone applying for a **** to work in the US," Bloomberg's Francis Wilkinson wrote Wednesday.

An unavoidable question follows: Did the wife of a presidential candidate who rails against illegal immigration lie about earning a degree to bolster her application for a work ****?

There is another possible version of events, but it is no less problematic. Melania Trump also has described in interviews her compliance with a requirement to return periodically to Slovenia to stamp her ****. Politico's Ben Schreckinger and Gabriel Debenedetti explained in a Thursday story why that doesn't jibe with her claim to H-1b status.

This time the focus is on apparent inconsistencies in her account of immigrating to the United States from Slovenia in the 1990s. The subject is clearly relevant to the campaign, given her husband's hard-line stance against illegal immigration and his use of Melania as an example of how to do things right. Yet it is inherently uncomfortable for the press to scrutinise a political spouse who is not running for office and so obviously prefers to remain in the background.

How exactly did Melania Trump come to America, reporters ask.

"Trump's tale of returning to Europe for periodic **** renewals is inconsistent with her holding an H-1B **** at all times she was living in New York - even if it was the lesser-known H-1B **** specifically designed for models - said multiple immigration attorneys and experts. An H-1B **** can be valid for three years and can be extended up to six years - sometimes longer - and would not require renewals in Europe every few months. ...

"Instead, Trump's description of her periodic renewals in Europe are more consistent with someone travelling on a B-1 temporary business visitor or B-2 tourist ****, which typically last only up to six months and do not permit employment."

Trump did, of course, work as a model when she moved to the United States. So another question arises: Was she working illegally? The GOP nominee certainly would not approve of that.

Without providing details, Donald Trump's campaign has maintained throughout the election that Melania followed all immigration laws to a T. And, to be clear, there is no irrefutable proof to the contrary. Maybe she was open about dropping out of college and got an H-1B **** anyway. And maybe when she occasionally travelled to Europe, she got stamps on her passport, not her ****, and she is just confusing the two now. Maybe.

What's tricky here is there is no way to know for sure without some serious digging by the media - the kind of digging that would normally be reserved for a candidate. Hard as the media might try to make such an effort about Donald Trump - just as it tried to make Melania's plagiarised speech about the campaign apparatus - it would be hard to avoid the appearance of targeting a spouse who won't be on the ballot in November and clearly does not want to be a political figure.

Melania Trump's immigration story is surely germane to the election, but covering it is a very delicate task.

If it turns out she lied about having a degree which is one of the pre-requisites for gaining a H-1b viza. So yes as a 1st lady nominee she has dragged herself into this...

According to Politifact, which fact checks statements by major political figures, 69% of Trump's statements have been dubbed "mostly false," "false" or "pants on fire." Clinton has gotten those ratings 27% of the time.

If she was here on an H1-B **** this is easily verifiable with immigration. However, this is very unlikely since you need an advanced degree, Master's or higher and the H1-B visas are given to doctors, scientists, engineers, professors, etc.

She is probably here illegally which will make Trump have steam coming out of his ears.

Hillary said that she wants to deport little kids ...she did try to cover up though on the most recent debate, but the damage has been done. Too bad the Latinos who support her, don't see a clear picture of what kind of a monster she really is.

"In last night’s Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton swore up and down that she does not want to deport kids, no way, no how.
But immigration attorneys who represent young children facing deportation—often to some of the most violent countries on the planet—are pretty skeptical that it’s a promise she will keep.

“If in fact there is another refugee crisis this summer, we have no idea what her statements will be,” said Matthew Kolken, an attorney with Kolken & Kolken Immigration Lawyers. “The best person to ask would be a pollster.”

Clinton struggled mightily to communicate last night that deporting children is bad.

“I will not deport children,” she said after moderator Jorge Ramos pressed her multiple times on the issue. “I would not deport children. I do not want to deport family members either, Jorge.”

It was a significant moment, and it represented a departure (or, one might say, flip-flop) from her previous stance on the issue. Just two months ago, at a Democratic candidate forum, Clinton defended the practice of deporting children.

“I would give every person, but particularly children, due process and have their story told,” she said at the time. “And a lot of children will of course have very legitimate stories under our law to be able to stay.”

And less than two years before that, Clinton argued passionately that undocumented children in the United States be subject to deportation. On June 17, 2014, she told Christiane Amanpour that children fleeing from violence in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala shouldn’t be able to stay in the U.S"

What Donald Trump's candidacy has really meant for his business empire

Early on in the presidential campaign, some pundits argued that Donald Trump's candidacy was just a fleeting effort that would leave little impact on the race, but could ultimately bring more attention and revenue to the Trump business empire.

But more than a year later, both of those ideas may be wrong. Trump's candidacy has turned out to be serious - and the effects on his businesses may not have been as positive as he hoped.

Foursquare, a location-based app where users can "check in" to various businesses and restaurants, released interesting data on Thursday (Friday NZ time) showing foot traffic to Trump-branded businesses appears to have fallen significantly during the presidential campaign.

In the past, Foursquare and its sister app, Swarm, have figured out how certain businesses are performing by scouring their data on the foot traffic of more than 50 million users, which includes both "check-ins" at various businesses and location-based data for people who allow the app to access their location in the background.

The company accurately predicted a big drop in Chipotle's sales following a food poisoning scandal earlier this year, and successfully forecast how many iPhones Apple would sell after the launch of its 6S. Now it is using the same approach to examine Trump's businesses.

Foursquare found that, since Donald Trump announced that he was running for president in June 2015, foot traffic to Trump-branded hotels, casinos and golf courses has dropped.

"Since spring, it's fallen more," the company says. The Trump Organisation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump's businesses failed to see the gains in foot traffic that they typically do during the summer of 2015, Foursquare says. Things appeared to get worse this spring, as voters in states around the country went to the primaries. Foot traffic at Trump properties was down 17 per cent year-on-year in March, April and June, and down 14 per cent year-on-year in July.

The data obviously only represents people who use Foursquare and Swarm, which is a select group. The company says that it has normalised that data against figures from the US census to remove age and gender bias, but that urban dwellers are still somewhat over-represented in their figures.

One likely reason for the fall in traffic, Foursquare says, is that Trump's hotels, casinos and golf courses are mainly located in Democrat-favouring states like New York, Hawaii, New Jersey and Illinois, and depend on local visitors from those regions. In blue states, Trump's properties have seen foot traffic decrease by more than the national average, for example falling 20 percent year-on-year in July 2016.

Foursquare's analysis also shows that this drop has been particularly driven by women, who tend to have more unfavorable opinions of Trump than men, polls show. Visits by women to Trump hotels, casinos and golf courses have fallen by nearly one-third this spring.
