    TECH Guys, Check in

I'm looking for a new modem and router

I have some old Linksys's, probably 7 or 8 years old

So I start looking at them and it's a different world now. They have combos, stand alones, NAS storage, 802.11ac only, etc.....

I don't know what ANY of that stuff is

Can you guys give me a recommendation please?

FWIW, not sure if it matters, I have an imac with fokkn comcast

They said they would rent me one but I'm skeptical about this option

I just did a speed analysis test on Xfinity, it said it would take about 30 minutes and then inform me of the recommendations

After 1 second it said "your modem is at end of life and not designed to support high speeds"

    I don't doubt it

A $50 Wal-Mart modem is only meant to take a man so far

Now they're mentioning someone called DOCSIS 3.0 which 8x to 16x faster than 2.0 depending on which review I read

I feel like I'm fukked if I make the wrong choice here

For a docsis 3.0 Modem go with this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/arris-su...Fc-FfgodSKQNMg

    http://www.surfboard.com/products/sb6141/

There is one a step up, Model # 6183 which has 16 channels for downloads and claims to be faster. However, unless you are in San Francisco or somewhere with crazy fast internet, the modem is rated for more than you can get. Bottom line, save the $ and get the one from the link above. I go through Cox and it's approved for them and most cable companies. I just upgraded to a Docsis 3.0 Modem so I did all the research. I stayed with my old router. Don't get the wifi router and all in one modem combo...they are garbage. Don't rent either, you will have it paid for in a year.

Just like EL said Krack.... I'm using Surfboard 6141 right now... best modem ever made.... the key is the ROUTER. Go on Ebay... you can get the 6141 for like $50-$60

Looking at a listing right now.... buy it now for $44.99 + Free Shipping. Can't beat it.

You're on an iMac (I'm Mac Pro). Get an Airport Extreme; Comcast should provide you with a modem (modem only, not the combo modem/router). Using their combo modem/router with your own router creates a bunch of headaches; you have to rely on one of their techs to put you in bridge mode to disable the router functions otherwise you end up in a double nat situation which is another whole can of worms. Google for more info. Their modem your router, spend a few minutes setting up and you're good to go. Had one for years, never any problems other than the occasional need to reboot which is normal.

Went with the 6183 modem and my download speeds which were 10mbps roughly on a 150mbps plan, now I'm getting between 90mbps and 175mbps download speed, depending on time of day I'm not even sure how important that # is but it makes me feel like I'm at least getting what I'm paying for

Thx for the suggestion Ninoer, it wasn't very expensive and is working well. Have some points pal

I don't want to deal with this shit in 2 years so give me the current "have to have" specs/features on a modem and wi fi router. Here is what I am considering for a set up

    Modem Net Gear CM600
    Router Net Gear AC3200

The boner tech dude from the cable company says that my current modem/router setup will max out at 100mbps even though it is rated at 340. It's a NetGear C3000 which I realized after I bought it that it only operates at 2.5ghz and not any other bandwidth. My comment to him is that I am not even getting 100 through the ethernet so it's really both an equipment issue and a provider issue.

    What say you, network pros?

I pay for 200mbps and get 20 over wifi and maybe 70 connected. I ain't payin for 300 until this shit gets fixed which will likely require the provider to upgrade their lines and me to upgrade my equipment.

If you are paying for 200MB, then you definitely need to upgrade your equipment. The issue is that your wifi is only capable of 2.4GHZ so your max speed will only be 54MB with zero interference(impossible by the way) so 20-30 is about right. You are getting 70MB connected because your port is only capable of 100MB and you will lose some speed due to cable attenuation(loss of signal depending on cable). I would recommend a Cat6 ethernet cable

Cisco purchased linksys awhile back and I would recommend the Cisco router/switch. You can get a gigabit(wired) and 802.11ac(wireless) combined device for around $100 especially if you are paying for 200MB.

you definitely want to be on the 5GHz for wireless(less interference and faster speeds). The 2.4GHz frequency is what a majority of households are using so if you are in a condo/apartment you are fighting for airspace with everyone around you. Microwaves and bluetooth devices are on the 2.4 as well so more interference.

    hope this helps

    My current router/wifi
The manufacturer claims speeds of 300 for wi-fi and gigabit ports. For sure the coax in the house is old so they are replacing that this week. I understand the need for 5ghz for better wifi performance so I intend to upgrade for that reason alone. My biggest concern though is that they are charging me for 200mb service and I am being told that it's my equipment that's the problem. In theory a wired connection should achieve those speeds if their service is really producing, no?

the equipment is capable of 1gig wired port connectivity. Check your client device to make sure you are connecting at 1gig. Your client might only be capable of 100MB. If you are connecting at 1gig and you are only getting 70MB and supposed to be getting 200MB, then your provider is the problem, not the equipment. Bullshit answer by many of these providers.

for the wireless, straight up false advertising. 2.4GHz is the only frequency available and it says you can get up to 300MB speeds. In theory this can only be accomplished with channel bonding and because there are only 3 channels available in the 2.4GHz spectrum, it is virtually impossible due to the interference(let alone illegal in the US). Cisco (top wireless tech company around) does not even allow channel bonding on the 2.4Ghz spectrum.

you can bond channels in the 5GHz frequency to get legitimate faster speeds. Bonding 2 channels together (40Mhz) will get you 300Mbps and with an 802.11ac wifi router, you can bond 4 channels together(80Mhz) and get 600Mbps(in theory). these speeds will never be attained due to interference and SNR (signal to noise ratio).

with an 802.11ac (5Ghz) device, you should legitimately get 100-200 Mpbs speeds continuously.

with your existing equipment, you should definitely be getting more than 70 if your provider is saying 200 and your client device is connected at a gig and not 100Mb.

    Booya!

Thanks man - I'll check the specs/settings on the machine I am using to test. I know the cable guys use the equipment excuse to upsell you on their shit and to justify their shitty performance so I want to make sure I am not missing anything. The guy straight up told me that the equipment would only achieve 100 MAX wired and I called bullshit.

NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Router (R7000) is my beast of a router. A must now since it takes a few days but learns a balance between mobile devices and others to divvy out the needs.

Just grabbed the Arris SB 6190 and the Netgear Nighthawk X6

220-230 MB down and 24MB Up over wifi

haven't tested the wired connection yet but I am paying for 200

Super annoyed that the fukkin TWC rep who sold me the upgraded internet earlier this year didn't mention that they wouldn't push out more than 100MB for my old modem/router. I was basically paying for speeds that I could never achieve and they knew it. I got a free year of Showtime and the upgraded speed for my trouble

its sad these clowns take advantage of people that aren't technical. Good to see you are getting the performance now
