Tipping, when to draw the line

I work in the service industry so I know how it is. I consider myself a good tipper, even when I have awful service at a restaurant I tip 15%. I always tip my BJ dealer. Cashing out at the window tonight I noticed the cashier has a tip box. F'real?! Do you guys tip these people? Its like tipping your bank teller, I gotta draw the line there. What you say SBR

Tip the cashier? I am sure they are not getting paid $2.81 an hour. It's hard enough to make money in the casino since you are against the odds to begin with. By the time you win, have to tip everyone, and then make it through all of the beggars in the street to get back to your car, you'll be right back where you started.

I also noticed a tip box at Subway the other day. Not sure if that is for Jared or what.

Do you guys tip at restaurants when you get food to go?

Like I get my pizza from this little shop all the time. I obviously tip when I get it delivered but what about to go? Around the holidays I give the girls a couple bucks if they are hot but is there a point? Do you tip when you carry out?

I just got 2 Stromboli's today for take out at the local Pizza joint and I didn't tip. Some restaurants automatically add on a charge for take-outs. I don't have a problem with that as I understand the material and extra work that can be involved (I worked in a restaurant for 15 years)

I think it depends on how much stuff you get. Tossing 2 Stromboli into 2 boxes is actually less work than putting them on plates and then having to wash those plates.

I never tip when I pick a pizza up at a pizza place like Papa Johns. I mean they were already going to put it in the box anyways. The whole reason why I usually pick up my food via carry-out is to save money that I would have to use for tipping through delivery. Most of the places that I eat at are pretty close.

Most people usually think of using only one hand when they give a handjob, but you can also give one using two hands

Not always. It depends on the size of the task for the job. Unless of course you are talking about alternating between hands.

I quit going to get my haircut because they got mad I wouldn't tip.

Now my mom cuts my hair.

    My mom is partially blind.

I'm waiting for my hair to grow out so I can leave the house again.

    I did save $3.

    I win.

Here in Oregon they just raised the minimum wage to 14.75 an hour. Tips will drop to practically $0.

I tip a dollar on carry out orders. for blackjack I make a 1-5 dollar bet for the dealer every 10-15 hands or after a big double down win or side bet. if someone's making less than minimum wage bc tips are expected, and they're not a douche you should really tip em. like it or not it's customary in America

Regardless of whether more people want tips than what's considered customary, it's more commonly a scam.

I give a casino $100 for some chips. An hour later I go cash out for $100 and you want me to pay for that "privilege." Hell no I'm not playing that game. For you people who tip for take-out orders, do you also include McDonald's and fast-food joints in that group? If your answer is "No," why not?

Employers have to pay the people who work for them a fair, respectable wage. Period. End of discussion.

From what I know, tip those guys at the windows when you get paid-i.e. when you hit for few grand.

Don't worry about it, your one buck or 5 bucks is great if nobody hits. Their minimal tips can get them a dollar value meal when nobody hits and they don't have to pull out their debit card. But later that week, somebody will hit for a few grand on one of the tables, and the'll get a couple black chips thrown their way. You are fine.

no one should get tipped. you applied for a job, that's your job.

im fine with paying more to cover costs and a decent hourly wage

its not my job to guess how much a server should make and if you bring me steak compared to noodles all of a sudden you get bigger tip because my food is more?

    fukk off

$11/hr is what you need. don't like it? go back to school or learn a trade.

All restaurants in Tenerife (Spain) have tips included, so you pay 7% no matter what.

In Ukriane, where I'm right now, you don't tip at all. I do sometimes (which surprises them a lot), especially when waiters switches from Ukrainian to Russian when they realize that I'm not a local

Are we really gotten to this point? A tip for making my sandwich, aka doing your job?

lol such a joke. In Europe at some establishments they have different bills, so if you are American you'll get the bill with a tip line added.

people who tip on carry out orders are the worst. Those people are called "enablers." They are furthering improper tipping behavior.

You don't tip on carryout unless you have a huge order, and I mean huge. Certainly 4 or less people doing carryout = no tip.

Why would you tip someone for doing their job? On a psychological level it is very negative because you're entitling these people who think they deserve something that they do not.

I only tip of carry out for huge orders, or if I frequent the place a lot - like every week. And still, only a $1.

Cashiers / people working carry out make more money hourly wage than the waiters/waitresses, so tipping isn't expected.

the Chinese restaurant I work at takes all the waiters tips for the house lol ! it's an extra 20 per cent profit for the restaurant. I feel bad for the waiters. but really , what's an extra couple bucks if you can help improve someone's financials if they are nice

To address OP...of course you shouldn't be tipping the cashier. Really shouldn't have to tip any cashier ever. Not to say I don't/haven't. But it's definitely not to be expected.

Some things certainly are getting out of control. Recently took a volcano bike ride thing on Maui (yeah I know my girl booked it). The guys went over all of the safety stuff at the beginning and then went over what they are usually tipped...even had it written on the safety sheet. I get it you guys are trying to make a living but this tour shit is expensive as hell and the whole tipping thing is a bit overboard. If we want to tip we'll tip. Unfortunately I guess they felt compelled to do something because these tours are usually filled with fat haole cheap midwestern fukks.

I always tip 20% . As long as the service is decent . If someone makes a mistake i still tip well . If someone ignores us or gives us really crappy service then i give a lower tip. But you would have to really piss me off for that . Twice i was pissed off enough that i left .25 all in pennies . But i even tip the people if i pick up food. We used to have a waitress we liked at Charlie Browns. When we went in there after our vacation we gave her the normal 20% plus a bag of Hershey Kisses with Macadamia nuts in them too that we got from Hawaii when we were there.

People that say it is their Job annoy me. So they could be making $2.00 and hour and serving your ass and you will screw them because you feel it is their Job? Yes, they chose that job assuming that people will tip them for good service. I do agree if they are payed a good amount that they should not get as much. Or if they automatically add the amount on they need to make that clear. I was at the Flagship and tipped 20% . Then the next day my wife pointed out they added 20% automatically to the check . That ticked me off . They should have a list somewhere of what people make at all the different restaurants. If someone is making $2 an hour i have no problem with 20% but if they are getting $12 an hour then i would still tip but just less .
