    Laid-off Today

I don't feel awful, more disappointed I didn't get to walk on my own accord.

Warnings of cutbacks were rumored for some time. And considering I was most senior in my group and butted heads with management made me a no brainer.

Gut punch came when they wouldn't let me walk back to my workspace to collect my things and say goodbye to my colleagues without security escorts. I know that a common policy, but still - sucks.

I'm 26 - not sure if I want to remain a cog in the political machinery of a DC law firm anymore.

So, other than the obvious (applying for jobs and interviewing) what do you all do to pass your excess downtime??

    Many Thanks

Thanks harry - I have considered that, I've felt the immediate urge to travel for the next two weeks. Nothing crazy but rarely been off the East Coast.

Got no wife, kids, just myself so I don't need to jump into the next offer that hits me.

applying for a job online is cool, but that's what everyone else is doing it also

hit networking mixer for young professionals like yourself
also tell all of your friends and relatives that you got laid off and let them help you find a job

Thanks Rocket - I know what you mean, applying for a job online is like social media movements, they amount to just a few keystrokes of movement and not much else.

I'm a tad (read - a lot) unsocial, particularly in networking events. They feel fake to me. I've pulled my friends in for help but a lot of them don't work in my industry.

You don't have to be outgoing or social when you go to those events...just be clean, presentable, firm and know how to sell yourself with a few short sentences.
Also get yourself a handful of recruiters who work for big name hiring agencies...they are the once who would generally have pocket listings for new openings that haven't been posted online yet.

    gl to you!

When I asked you last night about my difficulty in quitting my daily indulgance of peanuts you gave me the exact same response.

Very sorry to hear this burrito. Probably best to take a couple weeks or so and travel or whatever you want to do. Since you've been laid off you should get unemployment no problem.

Hey Manny, long time no chat man. job and income lost - yes. Livelihood? No. I wasn't long for the industry and it's certainly not life and death. I have about 18 months to live off of comfortably. In any event, despite today's setback, I've been feeling a lot better physically. Now that you brought the crabhouse back up, obviously that's something I gotta do. After all, I'm unemployed

a better way to do this, is to find a job right away...tell them that you can start in 1-2 weeks and then go to travel during that time

a healthy 26 y.o. shouldn't rely on milking sorry ass unemployment checks, if he's capable of making a lot more while working at a regular job

Most conflicts and background checks take close to 3-4 weeks given the speed of clearance. But your point is well taken that unemployment is not worth the bureaucratic headache.

sup Deuce!......the bay bridge is just 5 minutes from where I live!...anyhow, the crab house that you are referring to I believe is called Stevensville Crab Shack...it's the first crab joint pass the bridge on the right hand side....and the other two famous in that area are the kentmorr restaurant and Harris crab house towards Grasonville...yes, they are pricey but that's the going rate just about anywhere...but Mike's in Annapolis is actually reasonably priced with a plethora of lunch specials, not just seafood...but I love Jumbo crabs...expensive, but damn good!...besides, I just withdrew $750 from my Bookmaker account after kicking some NCAA tournament ass so life is good!...

It's called Hemingways. Just looked at Amex bill. It's literally right off the bridge. Before the airport even.
