Timmy allowed himself to be a team player and a centerpiece that others wanted to play with and has the highest winning percentage of probably any player over the last 30 years. I'll say Timmy.

    Dumb question.

Tim Duncan could not dominate a game like Kobe Bryant.

Anyone that thinks Duncan is a better player never watched NBA closely.

Even Tony Parker last week said: "For us, Kobe was our Jordan."
    - This is coming from a guy that has played with Tim Duncan his entire career.

    Foolish question.

One went for a money grab, sacrificing his team's ability to compete on a nightly basis. The other went for a championship grab, sacrificing tens of millions of dollars so that people would call him a 'winner'.

All around I say Duncan. People forget Kobe was nothing too special 1st few years or last several obviously so you just have that great middle chunk. Duncan no off court issues , seems like much better teammate and harder to find all time great 4 or 5 spot bigs than it is 2 guards. If I'm starting a team and it's between these 2 Duncan a no brainer.

Duncan for me too. Bryant dominated the offense -didn't dominate games. Celtics really had his number in both of those finals series. No one stopped Duncan in his prime. Think of that Pistons team he went against in that epic finals series, with the best defensive bigs in the game - R.Wallace/ B.Wallace/ McDyess -he schooled all of them.

Duncan. Not only just as a player for 20 years, but more importantly as a team player and company man.

Kobe been getting paid 25+ million the past 3 years....Been injured, team sucks with or without him.
Duncan took a paycut to 10 mil for past 3 years...Taken days off, stayed "healthy" resulted in finals loss, a championship, first rd exit.
Likely to be back in the mix this year too.

Give me Duncan type guy any day of the week. Bryant easily could of taken less money for last few years, realized what he was to the team and given the championship another run (granted he's been injured though)

Hard to compare when they didn't play the same position.

It would be like trying to compare Jim Brown to Jerry Rice. Or Hank Aaron to Nolan Ryan.

Think they both played in the correct city.

    Duncan in LA?
Kobe in SA playing for Pop.
    Don`t think so.

Have to start a team with Timmy though as bigs were much more important the last 20 years.
Today, might have to take Kobe as the league has changed so much.

Agreed. Kobe wasn't going to win any rings without Shaq/Gasol.

Today though, people think Anthony Davis is going to lead the Pelicans to greatness...Albeit he doesn't have a Tony Parker/Manu/Bruce Bowen, he isn't going to win anything without a "decent" supporting cast.

Kobe gets it, but Duncan has had a healthier career as he's never blown out his achilles tendon or battled injuries like Kobe has had to do....

Duncan has been playing at a higher level and has been more consistent then Kobe as well at the tail end of both careers.....

I'm one of the biggest Kobe haters, but I still find this thread unbelievable. Everything is about how nice a guy Duncan is, company man, team player, etc. Great - he's a better person and more likable than Kobe. But he's not a better player. For much of his career, he was not even the best at his position. In Kobe's prime, there wasn't a question about whether he was the #1 shooting guard.

Tim takes massive pay cut to make room for them..

nobody ever left Spurs to get away from Tim,
Duncan does not blame other players to explain a big loss..

3 Finals MVP Trophies (more than Kobe)
2 NBA League MVP (again, more)
    5 Rings

    no argument, not even close**

IF flashy/selfish ridiculous isolation 1-on-5 circus shot is main consideration- then Kobe

    Both great players.

    Better teammate: Duncan
    Better individual player: Kobe

If you asked both of them which one is better Duncan would say Kobe. And Kobe would say Kobe.

    according to this rational:

IF playing a basketball game, then choose Duncan

    IF playing 1-on-1, choose Kobe

IF playing LIFE. then choose Duncan

Mailman, KG, Webber, rasheed Wallace, and mcdyess were pretty good in the late 90's. I saw KG give Timmy fits plenty of times even though he was bringing a knife to a gunfight

Kobe in a landslide. Duncan is amaaaaazing, but Kobe is something else. Duncan can't do a thing if someone doesn't get him the basketball. Down two with three seconds left, Duncan was never the first option. Down three with three seconds left, Spurs might be better off with Duncan on the bench. Duncan was surrounded by phenomenal supporting casts his entire career. Put four garbage players on the floor with Duncan, and you've got a blowout. Put four garbage players on the floor with Kobe, and he's a legitimate threat to score 50+ every night. If he gets hot, he can beat any team in the history of the sport by himself.

I know people love to hate anything Los Angeles and I know people love to hate Kobe because he's a "bad teammate", "locker room cancer" blah blah blah blah blah. Shut up and remind yourself, 90% of Kobe Bryant conversations consist of someone saying that Jordan is better. That should be a pretty clear indicator of what we're dealing with.

Oh and one more thing. Those of us from la just roll our eyes at the hate. We're used to it in all things. We don't really understand it, maybe you're jealous of the weather or all the gorgeous women? Whatever it is, we do not give a shit. We think it's funny. This is the reason that we do not vehemently hate Duncan. We love him. We went to war with him several times, both sides having wins and losses. There is a huuuuge respect there. One of the top players of all time by any account, but he's not Kobe.

Didn't they try that for a couple years when Shaq left? Horrible one year. Lost in first round a couple times to that stud suns team consisting of shawn marion and steve nash.

I think there was another player around that time that was making it to the playoffs with GARBAGE around him and actually won a couple series'.
