    1 to 3 years in state prison...but if you're small time...and it's your first time, you might get just a huge fine and some community work.

    Not true. Is not illegal to be a player in a bookmaking operation it is only illegal for the person charging juice. And if you don't charge juice you can go to the police station and tell them that you'll take their action and there's nothing they can do about it. The reason is once juice charged it makes it commercial endeavor, and you would need to be licensed to conduct that sort of business.

    It's definitely not illegal on a federal level to make a bet with a bookie. Some states, however, do have laws criminalizing the making of bets.

    You can book guys at no juice till the cows come home. Its considered a private transaction between private parties.

    It's locals or nothing for me. Don't trust Rasta dudes taking my $$ over the phone in Costa Rica or Jamaica, etc. For suckers. Haven't met one yet that pays out on time......if at all. Pinnacle is the only legit book I know but it's tough for Americans to get a bet down.

    Only read the first half of the article. They never mention if Sal was charging the undercover pig juice or not. A couple paragraphs in the article reads;
    "the games were legal so long as no one took a “rake,” or a cut of the stakes. No one had, but police claimed the $5 the hosts charged players to buy refreshments qualified as a rake."
