    I hate intentional walking

i have the rockies, 2 outs top of the 9th they walk fielder to get to beltre, he hits a single and ties the goddamn game up. what once was a 7-0 lead is now a goddamn tie.

i want to know if anyone has the numbers on how often intentional walks end up backfiring. it seems like it happens somewhere around 98% of the time; however, that could just be my eyes lying to me.

    Probably 50 50 at best

You're just much more likely to remember when it screws you rsther than when you benefit from it

To be honest with you Tex, Beltre is the last guy they wanted to see with Leonys on second. Walk probably irrelevant there. Guy seems to always get that hit in those spots from what I've seen of him this year (Beltre i mean).

in all seriousness i bet it's worse than 50 50. but it's probably really close regardless.

this sounds kinda like regular asshole logic, but i almost feel like the guy they're walking to get to takes it as a bit of a slight therefore has a bit of a chip on his shoulder that he uses as motivation to ram his bat up your dickhole.

bear i completely agree, and this also is a great point. i'm sure whoever was out there for the rockies at the time (his name escapes me) was no hotshot, but if i'm him i would take it as a sure sign that i don't have a real future as a closer in the league.

Isn't it the manager that makes that call?

John Axford. He has actually done alot better than Latroy Hawkins was doing at the beginning of the year. He is a good dude. If i had to guess he probably smokes weed.

His 2 year old baby boy actually got bit by a rattlesnake in Arizona while he was out in spring training in March... crazy story but the kid is okay now.

    i'm sure.

No closer would do that i don't think. But IMO the fact that the coach called for the intentional walk sends the wrong message to your pitcher.

Intentional Walks are a simple strategy to implement in a few situations and absolutely the team issuing gains an edge in either a platoon adantage (lefty vs righty) a horrible hitter, such as a pitcher or almost zero power hitter coming up next, or defensive advantage in allowing for double plays and extra force out options.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-...entional-walk/

    3 years of data

Since the start of the 2010 season, Jeff’s data returned 2,955 plate appearances by position players following an IBB. There have been more intentional walks than this during the last 3+ years, but many of them led to pitchers hitting, and some of them resulted in plays that don’t really fit our criteria, such as a caught stealing or a pickoff. With almost 3,000 IBBs where the play involved the next batter, I think we have a decent sample with which to evaluate the post-IBB outcomes.
Okay, so, what is the overall batting line for hitters following an IBB? Not that impressive, honestly.
PA BB% K% BABIP ISO BA OBP SLG
    2,955 9% 19% 0.269 0.141 0.242 0.317 0.382
In all situations with baserunners on, the average line for all major league position players since 2010 is .267/.339/.417, so post-IBB hitters perform worse than hitters who come up in similar situations where an IBB was not involved.

16 games every night for 6 months. At least a couple or more intentional walks per game. For the last 100 years we must have at least 500,000 intentional walks. And this is only MLB. Count minor leagues, college and high school we could have millions of intentional walks.

    Anyone has stats?

i'd honestly like to know how often an intentional walk backfires in a clutch or game-deciding situation. it just seems to happen a lot.

here are the %'s of outcomes for the batter after 3,000 intentional walks in MLB from 2011-2013...note the high % of double plays and fielder's choices

For those interested, here’s the matrix of outcome rates after an IBB forces a position player to bat (where Other is a catch-all for things that happened less than 1% of the time, such as triples and triple plays):
    Play %
    Strikeout 18.1%
    Fly Out 15.2%
    Single 14.3%
    Ground Out 10.1%
    Fielder’s Choice 8.8%
    Walk 6.6%
    Double Play 5.7%
    Sac Fly 4.6%
    Double 4.4%
    Home Run 2.4%
    Foul Out 2.4%
    Line Out 1.6%
    Hit By Pitch 1.5%
    Other 2.2%

That is interesting. I still would wonder what the stats are in clutch situations, if such data is even readily available.
