Most of the chatter during the offseason and this spring was about teams like the Red Sox, Cardinals, Cubs, Yankees, and Padres, but the Rangers were also in the mix. They have some pitching on the way back from injury, like Martin Perez, Matt Harrison, and Derek Holland, but it makes sense that the two sides have kept in touch, especially since the Rangers have a legitimate shot to contend this season. No word on who the Phillies could be targeting in return, but the Rangers have plenty of interesting prospects. Hamels, who can block trades to 20 teams each season, is making $22.5 million this season and is guaranteed $73.5 million from 2016-2018. He would likely require his $20 million option for 2019 to be picked up in order to sign off on a trade. The Phillies should get plenty of calls leading up to July 31.
