Trump Supporters by the Numbers
Deeper analysis of the polls reveals that Trump's supporters tend to be young, less well-educated, not affluent and – surprisingly – most are not extreme in their right-wing ideology.
Trump's straight-shooting rhetoric and eschewing of political correctness is, to this point, playing well with young voters. Among those between the ages of 18 and 49, Trump sits at 28% of the vote, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll taken in July 2015. In older age brackets, his support falls sharply: Only 20% of voters 50 and older would choose Trump.
Education level serves as the most striking area of contrast between Trump supporters and non-supporters. The candidate has a whopping 32% support from voters with no college degrees. Among college-educated voters, his support falls all the way to the single digits, at just 8%.
For a man who loves to brag about his elaborate wealth, Trump polls surprisingly well with voters who have little wealth of their own. Among those with incomes of less than $50,000 per year, 31% back Trump.
Perhaps most surprising about Trump supporters, given the candidate's tendency toward incendiary rhetoric, is that most do not espouse extreme right-wing views. Republicans who classify themselves as very conservative prefer Scott Walker over Trump by a margin of 25 to 17%. There is also no statistically significant gender gap among Trump supporters: In the Post poll, he claimed 25% of the male vote and 23% of the female vote.
