Matt Cain On The DL Again

A couple of rotation injuries have opened the door for Chris Heston.

The 26-year-old right-hander was supposed to start Sacramento's season opener but instead will face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday at Chase Field. Heston is starting in place of Matt Cain, who has a flexor tendon strain and is headed for the disabled list for the fifth time in the last three seasons. Cain is expected to miss at least two weeks. With Ryan Vogelsong starting in place of Jake Peavy (back tightness) on Tuesday and management wanting to keep Yusmeiro Petit in the bullpen, Heston gets his second career start.

First Peavy has to sit out due to injury, and now Matt Cain is right back on it. Vogelsong had to start tonight, and he's making the D'Backs look like the Bronx Bombers right now. With Pence still out also in the batting order, I see the Giants having some problems, at least at the start of the season.

Brandon Belt pulled out of the game tonight with a strained groin. It just keeps getting worse.

For at least a day, the Giants have avoided placing additional players on the disabled list.

Brandon Belt said the MRI on his right groin revealed a very mild strain. Jake Peavy finally was able to loosen up a bothersome SI joint in his lower back and threw a strenuous bullpen session. He remains on track to start Sunday in San Diego.

"We'll re-evaluate him tomorrow when we get to San Diego and see where we're at," manager Bruce Bochy said. "But he feels a lot better."

Peavy came in early for an hour of intense treatment on his back.

"It's made some really nice improvement," he said.

Belt took about 25 swings in the cage and said that while he can feel the groin injury while swinging, "for being 24 hours out -- less than that -- it feels pretty good."

Bochy thought he might be available to pinch-hit Wednesday.

"We're going to give him a couple days and see how he does," he said. "It's a day-to-day deal (to start). If he's not making progress then we'll make a call."

They are done. Madison can not start 5 times a week.

Don't matter, the Padres are having issues too and they are all healthy.
