This is a thread about who are the best teams in the league "right now". Why would anyone put the Rockets there when they've been average at best lately especially since getting Josh Smith?
The Mavs as long as that German dude is around have nothing to prove against good teams. In the championship year in 2011 they had lost to like 8 or 9 straight playoff teams until beating New Orleans on the final day of the regular season. That sure meant a lot, right? Houston, on the other hand, has EVERYTHING to prove. Both Harden and Howard are losers until proven otherwise. Now I have noticed major improvements with Harden this year - but this still needs to be shown on the big stage.
I'm fine with taking the Mavs out if you can name another team that's been playing better lately. Who though? Memphis has struggled lately. The Spurs have been struggling for about a month. The Thunder have hit a bit of a rough patch (but they're about to go off, the Thunder will be at the top of everyone's list of hot teams in 2 or 3 weeks). The Suns and Clippers have been up and down.
A team from the East? I have no problem with putting the Pistons in there. Toronto and Washington have not been playing great lately though, even if you have to cut them some slack with tough trips out West.
