NFL Player News for Week 9 - Early Edition

    Courtesy of FootballGuys

WAS - Robert Griffin very close to return
    Source: NFL.com - Conor Orr
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) is 'very, very, very close' to returning to game action, according to head coach Jay Gruden. 'Physically I think he'll be ready to go. Doctors are feeling pretty good about it, they still want to feel around this week until we make the final determination. I just want to make sure he feels good in the pocket,'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Should the team ride the hot hand of Colt McCoy? Washington wants to be very cautious with their franchise QB, so Griffin will get all the time he needs to properly heal. Gruden said they don't want to rush Griffin back too soon, so the evaluation of him could last another week.

DAL - QB Tony Romo undergoing MRI
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) will undergo an MRI exam Tuesday, Oct. 28, for a better look at his bruised back. X-rays came back negative Monday, Oct. 27, and he was able to return to the Week 8 game after taking a pain-killing shot. The team expects Romo to be ready to play the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9. He finished the game with 209 yards after going 17-for-28, and he was sacked a season-high five times.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Romo's back was already a concern for the team. Now they'll be watching even closer. This latest injury will only make him more a limited participant during the week of practice. The hope is that Romo should be able to continue playing with this less-than-100-percent back.

PHI - RB Darren Sproles fully practices
Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Les Bowen
Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles (knee) fully participated in practice Tuesday, Oct. 28. Sproles said he is hopeful to play this week, but is not sure of his status until he gets more practice in.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Sproles should be back out there for the Eagles in the near future. When he returns, the targets in the passing game will be distributed differently...and it will negatively impact the number of targets that secondary receivers like Riley Cooper sees.

NYG - RB Rashad Jennings not ready
Source: New York Post - Paul Schwartz
New York Giants RB Rashad Jennings (knee) is not ready to go for Week 9, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. Jennings said he is not able to make cuts yet and has been limited to linear running.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Some thought Jennings would be back after the team's bye week. Now, it looks like Jennings needs a little bit more time. This means rookie Andre Williams could be their lead back in the Week 9 game against the Colts on Monday night.

NO - RB Khiry Robinson doesn't practice
    Source: NFL
New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson (forearm) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a short week for the Saints. They go on the road to take on the Panthers in Week 9. Robinson may not be able to play due to this forearm injury.

NO - No practice for RB Pierre Thomas
    Source: NFL
New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas (ribs, shoulder) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
It's a short week for the Saints. Thomas may not be able to play on Thursday night against the Panthers.

CAR - RB DeAngelo Williams limited
    Source: NFL
Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (ankle) was limited in practice Tuesday, Oct. 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Williams should be back this week. However, he's returning to a backfield where he'll split time with Jonathan Stewart. The Panthers play the Saints at home on Thursday night, and we can only recommend Williams as a low-end RB3/flex play.

STL - Jake Long to IR
    Source: ESPN - Adam Caplan
The St. Louis Rams placed OT Jake Long (knee) on Reserve/Injured Tuesday, Oct. 28.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Long has talent, but he's one of the most injury prone players in the league. He injured the same knee in Week 16 last year. Long will be replaced in the lineup by rookie Greg Robinson.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith's availability in question
    Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini
New York Jets QB Geno Smith's (shoulder) availability for Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs is in question, and he's experiencing 'minor soreness.' However, head coach Rex Ryan downplayed the severity of Smith's injury, and said the team hopes he can resume throwing by Wednesday, Oct. 29. QB Matt Simms will be ready just in case.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Even if Smith was 100 percent healthy, the team looks like it is moving forward with Michael Vick as the starter. This injury is only a footnote. Smith has clearly struggled as a starter, and the team is desperate for wins.

SEA - No rift between 'Hawks, RB Marshawn Lynch
    Source: ESPN.com - Terry Blount
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch does not have a rift between himself and the team, according to head coach Pete Carroll. A report Sunday, Oct. 26, said that the Seahawks had grown tired of Lynch's ways. 'At this point, I don't think it behooves us to try to respond to all these kinds of things,' Carroll said. 'Our players have told you how they feel about it, and we're in a really good place right now. It's just not worth it, but there's nothing to that.' Lynch has 111 carries for 482 yards this season.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The team could move on from Lynch in the offseason, but that was largely expected even before this drama. The Seahawks need to get back on track in defense of their championship. If the playoffs started today, Seattle would be out of the picture.

NO - TE Jimmy Graham limited Tuesday
    Source: ESPN.com - Mike Triplett
New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham (shoulder) was limited in practice Tuesday, Oct. 28. Graham said he still expects to play.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Graham looked more like his old self in Week 8. Fantasy owners should feel confident relying on him once again as a TE1.

TB - RB Doug Martin and WR Vincent Jackson stay
Source: NFL Network - Albert Breer
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin and WR Vincent Jackson were not traded as the NFL trade deadline passed Tuesday, Oct. 28, despite several rumors leading up to the deadline.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Martin was damaged goods as he's been banged up since his fantastic rookie season in 2012. Jackson is a seasoned veteran, but the Bucs weren't able to move him before the trade deadline.

PIT - WR Antonio Brown having amazing year
    Source: ESPN.com - Scott Brown
Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown leads the NFL with 60 catches and is second in receiving yards with 852 after the first eight weeks of the season. Brown is on pace for 120 catches and 1,704 yards, which would both be team records. He set the team record for receiving yards last year with 1,499. Brown has seven touchdowns, which is just one fewer than he had all of last year. He had 10 catches for 133 yards and two touchdowns in the team's Week 8 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
He's in the discussion as one of the best receivers in the game right now. Brown is a favorite target of Ben Roethlisberger and we've see the Steelers turn their offense over to the veteran quarterback. That means Brown will be heavily targeted and heavily involved each and every week. He's a no-brainer must-start for fantasy owners.

CLE - Isaiah Crowell needs to protect ball
Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot
Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell could be on the field more if he could protect the ball better, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said part of the team's decision to stick with Ben Tate late in Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders was because of Crowell's fumble issues.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Crowell is incredibly talented as a runner, but it doesn't matter if he can't hang onto the rock. We'll see if the rookie can impress enough in practice during the week to get more playing time. Pettine added that he would like Crowell to get more touches this week.

    NFL- CB Champ Bailey retiring
Source: The Baltimore Sun - Aaron Wilson
Free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Saints) has announced he is retiring, according to his agent.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Countdown about five years and we'll see Bailey in the Hall of Fame. Bailey had elite speed and could shut down the best receivers, but (unlike Deion Sanders) he also liked to tackle.

SF - RB Marcus Lattimore to return Wednesday
Source: San Jose Mercury News - Cam Inman
San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) will make his season debut on the practice field Wednesday, Oct. 29, and the team will have three weeks to evaluate whether to bring him off the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. It's unknown how Lattimore will factor into the running back mix if he returns.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We've got out fingers crossed. Lattimore is an incredibly gifted runner when healthy. He's been through two devastating knee injuries suffered in college at South Carolina, and he may never be the same back. Dynasty owners are waiting with bated breath here.

DAL - RB DeMarco Murray reaches 1,000 yards
    Source: ESPN.com
Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray became the first running back to reach 1,000 yards this season during the team's Week 8 game Monday, Oct. 27. He finished the game with 19 carries for 141 yards and four catches for 80 yards.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Murray extends his NFL record with his eighth-straight 100-yard rushing game to begin the season. With 11 more carries he'll surpass the number of carries he had last year in 14 games. Murray has never played a full 16-game schedule before in his pro career, and we think it would be wise for the Cowboys to ease his workload just a tiny bit. Fantasy owners need to grab Joseph Randle off the waiver wire just in case.

DET - DT Nick Fairley could be lost for season
    Source: ESPN.com - Michael Rothstein
Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions DT Nick Fairley (knee) isn't certain to return this season, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Fairley is dealing with a sprained knee, but there is hope that he can return in four to five weeks. Fairley had to be helped off the field in Week 8, and he was placed on a cart and taken to the locker room. He had 14 tackles and a sack through eight games.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Earlier reports seemed to indicate that Fairley would be out 4-5 weeks. Now, the timetable is non-existent. Consider him doubtful to return until we hear more about the nature of this knee injury.

    Quarterback

QB Tony Romo (DAL) suffered a contusion near the surgical site in his back Monday, Oct. 27. Romo left the field a bit gingerly after the hit but returned to the game after treatment. Romo was to undergo an MRI exam Tuesday, Oct.

QB Alex Smith (KC) is expected to play in Week 9 even with a sprained throwing shoulder.

QB Michael Vick (NYJ) will start this week against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to head coach Rex Ryan. With the way that Geno Smith has been playing, this should come as no surprise. Vick didn't exactly set the world on fire in Week 8 after replacing an ineffective Smith. We'll see if a full week of practice helps Vick look better against the Chiefs.

QB Mike Glennon (TB) will remain the starting job even though head coach Lovie Smith said the team has two quarterbacks capable for starting.

    Running Back

RB Bernard Pierce (BAL) was a healthy inactive in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Head coach John Harbaugh explained Sunday, Oct. 27, that he felt others gave the team a better chance to win. "We're just doing what we try to do as far as our personnel and getting guys up that we felt gave us the best chance to win the game," Harbaugh said. "We were jammed up. We did what we thought we had to do, and it worked out because our other backs stayed healthy."

RB Fozzy Whittaker (CAR) did not practice on Tuesday.

RB DeAngelo Williams (CAR) partially participated in Tuesday's practice. Williams is expected to play in Week 9, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Running back Darrin Reaves was waived by the team, so that's a big sign that Williams is ready to go.

RB Isaiah Crowell (CLE) had one rush for one yard in Week 8, while Terrance West had seven carries for 11 yards. Crowell could be on the field more if he could protect the ball better, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said part of the team's decision to stick with Ben Tate late in Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders was because of Crowell's fumble issues.

RB DeMarco Murray (DAL) became the first running back to reach 1,000 yards this season during the team's Week 8 game Monday, Oct. 27. He finished the game with 19 carries for 141 yards and four catches for 80 yards.

RB Jonas Gray (NE) rushed 17 times for 86 yards in the Week 8 game Sunday, Oct. 26. Gray ran decisively, which is something the team has seen in the downhill runner since training camp.

RB Rashad Jennings (NYG) is not ready to go for Week 9, according to head coach Tom Coughlin. Jennings said he is not able to make cuts yet and has been limited to linear running.

RB Darren Sproles (PHI) fully participated in practice Tuesday, Oct. 28. Sproles said he is hopeful to play this week, but is not sure of his status until he gets more practice in.

RB Marshawn Lynch (SEA) does not have a rift between himself and the team, according to head coach Pete Carroll. A report Sunday, Oct. 26, said that the Seahawks had grown tired of Lynch's ways. "At this point, I don't think it behooves us to try to respond to all these kinds of things," Carroll said. "Our players have told you how they feel about it, and we're in a really good place right now. It's just not worth it, but there's nothing to that." Lynch has 111 carries for 482 yards this season.

RB Marcus Lattimore (SF) will make his season debut on the practice field Wednesday, Oct. 29, and the team will have three weeks to evaluate whether to bring him off the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. It's unknown how Lattimore will factor into the running back mix if he returns.

RB Tre Mason (STL) and Benny Cunningham each were on the field for 18 snaps in Week 8. Zac Stacy received 15 snaps during the game.

RB Doug Martin (TB) The Buccaneers were fielding offers for Doug Martin and were more likely to deal him than Vincent Jackson, according to sources. Teams had approached the team about Martin, who could be had at the right price. He was believed to be expendable with Charles Sims eligible to come off the injured-reserve designated-to-return list. Martin, however, was not traded before Tuesday's deadline and remains a Buccaneer.

    Wide Receiver

WR Torrey Smith (BAL) has been the intended target for five of Joe Flacco's seven interceptions this season, which is tied for the most interceptions when targeting a receiver. Smith has also caught only 46.2 percent of the passes thrown to him this season.

WR Philly Brown (CAR) did not practice on Tuesday.

WR A.J. Green (CIN) said Sunday, Oct. 26, that he felt "about 80 percent" after feeling "40 percent last week." Green said he has not had any soreness after working out.

WR Greg Little (CIN) was targeted five times in Week 8 in his second start since signing with the team, and head coach Marvin Lewis said he feels Little "has the ability to make plays" for the offense.

WR Cordarrelle Patterson (MIN) left the locker room after the Week 8 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with his left foot in a walking boot, but he said Sunday, Oct. 27, that the injury isn't serious. Patterson was out of the boot on Monday and was expected to be fine, according to head coach Mike Zimmer.

WR Julian Edelman (NE) played in just 45 of the 74 offensive snaps Sunday, Oct. 26. He played in 45 of the team's first 52 snaps, but was apparently benched. The team didn't announce an injury, but he had two drops.

WR Brandon LaFell (NE) played in 61 of the 74 offensive snaps in Week 8 Sunday, Oct. 26. He had 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in the game.

WR Brandin Cooks (NO) Last month, Cooks became old enough to buy alcohol. Last week, he became the youngest player in league history to have a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in the same game.

WR Stedman Bailey (STL) is expected to join the starting lineup with Brian Quick (shoulder) out for the season.

WR Brian Quick (STL) is likely out for the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder and torn rotator cuff.

WR DeSean Jackson (WAS) had six catches on seven targets for 136 yards in Week 8, and he has topped 100 receiving yards three times in his last four games after managing just one 100-yard game in the first four games of the season.

    Tight End

TE Jordan Cameron (CLE) left the Week 8 game against the Oakland Raiders in the second quarter after a concussion. He was shaken up after a long reception and taken to the locker room. This is Cameron's third concussion in three years.

TE Rob Gronkowski (NE) left the game early in Week 8 because of dehydration and did not return. No long-term worry there.

TE Jimmy Graham (NO) partially participated in Tuesday's practice.

TE Jimmy Graham (NO) said he'll have to "live in the treatment room" to get ready for the Week 9 game Thursday, Oct. 30. He caught five passes for 59 yards and a touchdown in Week 8.

TE Heath Miller (PIT) posted seven receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown in the Week 8 game against the Indianapolis Colts. Miller joins former Steelers John Stallworth and Hines Ward as the only players in team history with 500 receptions.

TE Taylor Thompson (TEN) is expected to return to practice this week, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

    Kicker

PK Adam Vinatieri (IND) opened the scoring with a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter of the Week 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was his 200th field goal in a Colts uniform, making him the first player in NFL history to post 200 field goals with two different organizations.

    Offensive Line

OL Carolina Panthers (CAR) T Byron Bell did not practice on Tuesday.
T Nate Chandler partially participated in Tuesday's practice.
G Amini Silatolu did not practice on Tuesday.
G Trai Turner did not practice on Tuesday.

OL Chicago Bears (CHI) G Matt Slauson will miss the rest of the 2014 season after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in Week 8.

OL Philadelphia Eagles (PHI) G Todd Herremans suffered a torn biceps in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

OL St. Louis Rams (STL) T Jake Long has torn his anterior cruciate ligament for the second time in less than a year. Greg Robinson will shift from left guard to left tackle following the injury to Long.

    Defensive Tackle

DT Kawann Short (CAR) partially participated in Tuesday's practice.

DT Nick Fairley (DET) injured his medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament in Week 8, according to a source. He is expected to miss 4-5 weeks.

DT Cullen Jenkins (NYG) did not participate in practice Monday, Oct. 27, and likely will miss at least two games.

    Defensive End

DE Chris Canty (BAL) is making good progress from wrist surgery, and this will be a big week for his recovery.

DE Lamarr Houston (CHI) suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during a sack celebration in the Week 8 game against the New England Patriots.

DE Glenn Dorsey (SF) participated in practice Monday, Oct. 27. Dorsey is currently on the Active/Reserve/Injured list.

    Inside Linebacker

ILB Darryl Sharpton (CHI) is considered week-to-week because of a hamstring injury in Week 8. Sharpton likely will not be able to play in Week 10 even though the team has a Week 9 bye.

ILB Jon Beason (NYG) needs to undergo surgery on his injured foot and will miss the rest of the 2014 season.

ILB Mychal Kendricks (PHI) returned to action in Week 8, but he played around 20 snaps and said after the game that his strained calf was still not fully healed.

    Outside Linebacker

OLB Jason Williams (CAR) partially participated in Tuesday's practice.

OLB Justin Durant (DAL) suffered a torn right biceps in the Week 8 game Monday, Oct. 27, and will miss the rest of the season.

CB Patrick Peterson (ARI) going through the concussion protocol, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

CB Jimmy Smith (BAL) will miss a few weeks with his injured foot, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

S Thomas DeCoud (ATL) did not practice on Tuesday.

S Kenny Ladler (BUF) The Bills have placed Kenny Ladler on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Oct. 28.

S Nate Allen (PHI) is dealing with a slight hamstring issue and is being considered day-to-day.

S Mark Barron (STL) The Buccaneers traded Mark Barron to the St. Louis Rams for fourth and sixth-round round draft picks Tuesday, Oct. 28.

    General Team News

TM New York Giants (NYG) Giants general manager Jerry Reese said the team's offense has been cautious up to this point and wants that unit to be more aggressive. "I just think, as an offense, we have to be more aggressive," Reese said. "At times, we're a little bit almost too cautions with what we're doing offensively. This is the National Football League. You've got to go out there and you've got to win the game. You can't expect something to fall into your lap. You've got to take the game. And I think we've got to be more aggressive offensively."

I'm getting tired of keeping R Jennings on my roster, I don't think he is going to be there for long.

DAL - QB Tony Romo not practicing
    Source: ESPNDallas.com - Todd Archer
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) didn't take part in the walk-through Thursday, Oct. 30, and will not practice with the team. However, head coach Jason Garrett remains hopeful that Romo can play in Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. 'He's not ruled out for this game by any means,' Garrett said. 'He's getting himself mentally ready. He's in the meetings. He's a part of our football team, and hopefully as the week goes on, it feels better and he can function and it'll give him a chance to play.' Romo and the team continue to say that his injury is not related to his disc problem that he had surgery on last year. Romo said he'd play if the question is only about pain tolerance. Garrett said the team is calling the injury a bone contusion. The Cowboys are looking into modifications for Romo's pads if he is to play Sunday, Nov. 2.
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We do expect Romo to play this weekend, but it's worth keeping an eye on this. The hit to his back was tough and took him out of the game, but we expect him to play and believe the Cowboys are just being cautious. We see Romo as a solid QB2 this week even in a tough matchup.

Yea, I could not imagine any other team wanting to waste time nor resources on Doug Martin or V-Jax..
