Poker books? What is this, The 1980's?

the reason why I crush at cash is because I don't read these stupid books. The key to crushing deep stack cash is to be super creative in certain spots and take lines that villians never even consider.

Fck books training sites, develop your own style. Not that I think you cant win playing someone else's style. But you'll never crush, especially at 5/10 or higher.

so, do you want to read some ed miller and beat 2/5 for 15/hr? Or learn your own style and beat it for 60/hr?

That works. But this has its own challenges, the whales want to play with people who give lots of action, not nitty nut peddlers.

Super System I and II, the Dan Harrington cash and tourney series are all good and finally the David Sklansky book the Theory of Poker.

All of the above are dated but in my opinion where anybody should start that wants to understand poker better then learn to implement and change when playing live or online.

Theory of Poker is a must read. If you truly understand the concepts it teaches, you can be a winning player in a lot of games. Every other book is dated or plain wrong and will get most players in trouble. That said, the real secret to poker is not in a book or on TV or the internet. If you don't have it in your heart you probably never will.

    Well stated!

I think a lot of the books may be not as wrong as you note in the general sense but applying the concepts from them is what really is constantly changing.

Barry Greenstein's Ace on the River is a great read.
Also, Peter Collett's Book of Tells is great for live players, though not poker based.
    Good Luck.

Theory of Poker is older than dirt too. Still, Theory & Harrington Vol 2 were probably the two most important books for me. They got me really interested in poker and at the time I got a lot out of them. There were a few others down the line that were better and I learned more from, but Theory & HoH Vol2 were probably the most important for me.

You can get basics from a book....but real skill will come from playing and experience.

Maths/stats are your best friends in poker.

I think HoH was such an eye opener at least for tourney play that it might be the second most important book written on poker. Super system obv #1. Sklansky's books were ok until you learned that he kept an inbred girl dressed as a doll in his house. Then shit got a little weird three betting the turn.

Harrington books were groundbreaking no doubt. Same as Super System. They're both of little use in a modern game with even average talent because they all know the same information. ToP covers a lot of concepts players misunderstand that will never change. That equals more edges for you to exploit against real competition.

Sklansky as a person is a whole different topic that should stay on that forum, but don't let that take away from the importance of Theory of Poker.

I think you're overestimating the player pool .

You're right though. I wasn't the biggest fan of Supersystem. I've gotten more out of watching videos and talking with peers than reading books.

Especially for the 1/4 or so players here that will fold when half their stack is in the pot late in the tourney on their BB.

I played professionally for 2 years pre-black friday, and off an on for a decade before that... never read a poker book in my life. I bought Super System a while back and couldnt believe how basic and elementary it was, skimmed through it and realized the people playing this way were the people I was beating. Best thing you can do is join a training site and get a few friends to talk about hand histories with. Today, you have to be able to play all styles in order to win long-term. You really have to stay ahead of the poker curve if you want to win and keep winning. And having poker "skills" is only part of the battle, having discipline, self control, and bankroll management are essential and probably more important.
