    I think you will have to let us know what you consider to be "modern era". With the four names you mentioned, it would seem to be very, very recently (in terms of baseball, anyways).

    I would put Pedro on this list ahead of Nolan Ryan.....even though I love Ryan.

    I heard in a recent interview that he can still throw in the 90's. That's what he says anyway.....that's just sick!!

    Ryan was not as dominant day to day, week in and week out as Pedro, Big Unit, Maddux, Clemens

    Roy Halladay is a name i've not seen mentioned and I think there are a few reasons his amazing career gets under-rated

    he tarnished his legacy a bit by sucking in Philly in the end and he played for losers mostly

    I almost mentioned Halladay, but he went out at 34 years old. The way he rolled that fastball and curve off of that big overhead motion I thought he would pitch until he was 39-40. I think he really hurt his chances of the Hall the way he went out.

    If he had been on a better team (this from a TO fan), in a bigger market or played longer he would be mentioned on this list. Watching him pitch was a thing of beauty. His control was absolutely amazing....his best years it felt like he didn't walk anyone.

    thing about Ryan is that when he was on, there may have been no one more dominant

    guy had 7 no hitters, 12 1 hitters, 18 2 hitters

    his walks, fielding, and inability to keep runners from stealing hurt him over large sample sizes though

    guy never won a cy young

    only finished top 5 a handful of times in 27 years.

    when he was locked in, he may have been the most dominant and unhittable pitcher of all time

    but most of the time he was just a good pitcher

    One thing is for sure that we are witnessing a few of the best pitchers right now that the game has seen in the last few decades.

    Kershaw, King Felix, and Sale may be a great one before all is said and done.

    But I agree....very few guys can keep it up. Also, variance allows guys that are just ok to have fantastic years.

    Statistically, if a player plays 12 years in the major leagues, odds are about 40% that he will have ONE season that averages .100 points higher than his other 11 put together. The same goes for pitchers. Some of these great seasons are statistical oddities.

    true about stat oddities, its been an oddity that kershaw only had a 30-18 record in 2012 and 2013 despite having a combined ERA of 2.17 and a WHIP of .979
