A lot of conservatives have a libertarian view of this and support states' rights so they don't necessarily oppose legal gambling. The potential damage comes from Christie so openly defying federal law.

Any dreams he had of the presidency were torpedoed with all that bridge BS. And even if he vetoes it, they have the votes to override him. I really do believe it's inevitable. The NFL, NCAA, etc might tie it up in the courts, but the feds will definitely back down soon.

What kind of people are actually against others being able to legally wager on a sport? Takes a truly fukked up (or corrupt) person to try to dictate what you can and cannot do with YOUR money......Especially when there's lotteries, bingo halls, and God knows what else readily available to dump your paycheck on

    1) Just because a legislator voted to support the bill doesn't mean they would vote to override a veto
    2) This whole party goes down the drain if Christie decides to enforce federal law, something he is well within his rights to do
    3) It will take some big brass ones to defy a federal court order

I live in Jersey City and would absolutely take the train (just over an hour) to Monmouth Park on an NCAA football saturday or NFL sunday in the fall and hang out, watch the ponies, place a few bets, watch the games, and take the train back in the evening [train station is about a 3 wood from Monmouth Park].

and lulz @ the thought that this would ruin Christie politically; a) it's an extremely minor issue in the grand scheme of things b) it would be a bad move politically in NJ seeing as the overwhelming majority of pols in NJ are voting for this and c) it's clearly a silly law to begin with [allowing some states to have legal sports gambling and not others]

sure is gonna be interesting to see this play out...

UIGEA passed the house 421-2 and passed the Senate 98-0.

The only d-bags are those trying to blame this all on one political party over the other.

That's because it was sneakily attached to a Port Security Bill, which no one could vote against, by that scumbag Frist. You can definitely assign blame to the UIGEA to that POS Republican.

Sure thing, bro. The final vote on the bill was 519-2 if you total both chambers, but it is all 1 guy's fault.

BTW, last time I checked, the governor of NJ who wants legalized sports gambling is a republican. And one of the biggest opponents of legalized sports gambling is a democrat from Nevada (of course, he just wants to protect his state's monopoly). This simply isn't a partisan issue. I almost wish it was because then it would be easier to know where everyone stood, but it isn't.

Yeah, and there will never be recognized gay marriage, and weed will never be legal. Oh wait....

It will happen. Maybe not today, but it will happen. Just takes somebody with balls and deep pockets. In the end money rules.

Sports betting taints honest competition by stoking suspicion among fans that bets are affecting games [...] the leagues argued.

I think that is the stance that needs legal challenging.

If the NCAA's main objection is that gambling makes fans suspicious of match fixing, then their request to ban USA betting appears spurious to me. Given that gambling on games is already very widespread both inside and particularly outside the US borders.

It sounds like they want a law for an ineffectual reason that simply makes them feel like their own marketing will look better.

Seems like an unreasonable restraint of trade on the surface to me.

In fact, legalizing it would provide legal avenues for monitoring and enforcement of suspicious betting that are not available in the US now.

And oodles of tax revenue to pay for that enforcement.

It's like the NCAA argument is all ass about!

Sports in the USA still think, act and talk like sports in the UK did in the 1930s. It finally dawned on them eventually that working with betting partners provided another revenue stream, which they were foregoing for no benefit as the gambling was happening anyway. However, that was in the days before big money from TV etc. so there isn't quite the driver.

what's so stupid is the money is being bet anyway, through locals or offshore; illegal or not. The US is too stupid to get the winnings and taxes on all this money that is going elsewhere.

can you imagine how much $ they would make by drunks making bets at the stadium on gameday? We already know the general public is not smart enough to win long term.

I've seen mobile TAB betting terminals at a few sporting events here in Australia. And they have always been deserted.

Not sure the family & friends experience of going to see a live game blends in that well with impulse betting.
