Because Gabbert is horrible. They could draft a better QB in the 6th round for cheaper.

49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is scheduled to make $1.1 million in 2014.
His new backup, Blaine Gabbert, is scheduled to make $2.01 million.

More than likely he doesn't pan out, but I dont think it's any more likely a random 6th round QB does. Gabbert was forced to start on a terrible team, rarely a recipe for success. If he'd been given time to develop who knows. Maybe the Niners can reset the clock and he can be serviceable with a decent squad around him.

Is the coach sabotaging the GM or GM sabotaging the coach...

Nobody in their right mind would trade for this guy...

    Gabbert wont be kaep's backup.

Gabbert will be Colt McCoy's backup.

    Niners overpaid here.

Not a good move. Even for a backup qb, Gabbert is not a good selection. Jags won here.

I tend to agree with this. Gabbert was thrown into the fire and expected to buoy a pitiful team. Few guys would thrive under those circumstances. Give him a change of scenery and who knows? 6th round picks are a crapshoot anyways. Matt Cassel looked pretty good in a Pats uniform under coach Belichick, not so much as a Chief/Viking.

Maybe they see the reincarnation of Steve Young from Tampa Bay.

He's 6'4 240. Jags were a disaster for a young QB. 49ers might think he can be bought, improved, and sold, or replace the Kaep in 10 years.

bad move for 49ers. first they pretty much swapped Whitner for Bethea and now Garbage trade? Seahawks will own them again.

Harbaugh did help bring Alex Smith back from the brink of "bust". CK probably owes JH a lot of credit too.
