How is Pittsburgh NOT on the outside looking in?

Every bracket I've seen has had them easily in the tourney this year. They're in a bad run right now and have fallen to a likely 8/9 seed, but how are they not a bubble team right now?

    45th RPI
    77th SOS

Basically no marquee wins with their best win over Stanford on a neutral floor.

Yea I know they almost beat Syracuse but the fact is they didn't and they haven't beaten any of their toughest opponents. Not one.

You can make the argument that they should be in the tourney but how can anyone make the argument that they shouldn't at least be on the bubble?

With the exception of maybe Florida St., they don't have a bad loss. Also, they've been in every game except Duke at home which slipped away in the second half. With a KenPom ranking of 17th its easy to see at least efficiency wise why they are a virtual lock. Would have a case if they lose 2 of the next 3 and first round ACC tourney though.

I hear you on the not having a bad loss thing. But I don't think the KenPom thing is relevant. I know statistically, they are efficient but does anything seem efficient about them on the offensive end? It's pretty painful watching them try to put the ball in the basket.

    Thanks for the avatar props.

They always play down to their competition..case in point the virginia tech game. But they also can play with anyone with their slower pace and ability to play d. The d isn't as stout in years past but I would wanna be a top seed playing them in march with their style.

Pittsburgh does not have any real weakness, it does everything well without blowing you away in one individual category. The one thing they lack is that one go-to guy when the game is on the line. They are the very definition of a TEAM, which is why they usually do so well during the regular season but fizzle out in the tournament where you need that one star.

This team does this every year. It's a Dixson thing. They always rank high in efficiency statistics like KenPom but never seem to pass the eye test and underachieve in the tournament.

And this year's computer darling that I don't get is IOWA. Just about every set if power ratings I look at has them as a Sweet 16 team and a tourney sleeper, yet they don't even look like a top 25 team on the court.

    Does it really matter??

They will just get knocked off in round 1 or two

So many teams dead even now on neutral courts

    actually you have it backwards

when a team plays a larger sample size in the reg season, their true ability comes out

when they choke playing one game at the end of the year....consistently....then it's absolutely underachieving

and if it's year after year then it's no fluke

Meh, the way I look at it, Pitt has always been a team that is better than the sum of its parts, and then not having that one BIG part hurts them in the post-season.

I don't hate on Dixon, I think he has a GREAT system for getting the best out of his players, but again that plays out better in regular season. It is rare for a team to make a championship run without at least one star.

if you consistently win games during the regular season and you consistently lose early in the tournament, you can call it what you want but it's choking, period

dixon is responsible for getting the players he's got

dixon will never get fired and pitt will never exceed expectations....but i also figure that if they ever did dump him then theyd be more likely to get worse and generally be a non factor

are they the worst ats home team the last 3-5 years?
they are horrific at home, yet they have their fans practically on the court the way the arena is constructed...

Holy shit they're going to lose SU at home as 11 point favs. The odds makers give this team the benefit of the doubt WAY to much with these lines over the years.

I just checked Bracketology, and Lunardi has them in as 9 seed. I just want to know, howwwww? I'd rather give the seed to some mid major with only a few losses than these losers.

They have to be approaching bubble status. Have to.
