Nevada books set record handle on football betting in September

Interesting info written by Jason Logan from across the street

According to the latest reports from the Nevada State Gaming Control Board, Nevada books won $27.9 million on football betting in September, with a winning percentage (hold) of 8.98 percent.

But despite the record handle, the September football numbers pale in comparison to last year’s football winnings in the opening month of the season. Nevada books earned $42.5 million on football in September 2012 – a difference of almost 38 percent.

“This September was a great football month in which we actually set a record for volume but we were facing an extremely difficult comparison due to hold,” Michael Lawton, Senior Research Analyst for the Gaming Control Board, tells Covers.

“Last September, at the time, was the highest win amount recorded by the state on the second highest total in volume ever recorded,” says Lawton. “To top it off, football hold was a 13.91 percent last September.”

Books on the Las Vegas Strip took in $16.5 million of those September football earnings but fell short of last September’s haul of $22.2 million on football.

Baseball continued to be a steady profit maker for the state’s sportsbooks, earning $4.7 million in September after bringing in $5.2 million in August. That brings the season total (April-September) to $30.5 million with October’s report still to come.

Nevada books won $2.47 million on the category “other sports”, which includes golf, tennis, boxing, MMA, auto racing, hockey and other outlining sports. It was their first profit on “other sports” in two months, after losing $392,000 in August and $893,000 in July. A good portion on those earnings likely stemmed from Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s September 14 fight in Las Vegas.

Parlay cards saw business pick up with football season starting. State books won $4.98 million on parlays in September, a huge increase from the $606,000 won on parlay cards in August. Books earned $7.6 million on parlays cards in September 2012.

Overall, Nevada casinos won $39.6 million on sports betting in September 2013 – a decrease from September 2012’s earnings of $52.4 million.

Nevada casinos posted a total gaming win of $958,805,870 in September 2013, a 7.41 percent increase from September 2012 ($892,698,404).
