Utley certainly has the potential to be......but he's definately not there yet. I'd still rank guys like Morgan, Alomar and Sandberg ahead of Chase.

Utley also has potential to have the best slickback of all-time!

Hornsby. The year Utley hits .401 with 42 HR's and 152 RBI we can revisit this question.

classic kneejerk reaction thread. Utley is having a great series, therefore he's the best 2B of all time.

    jj would approve.

    Hornsby's .401 wasn't even his highest --- I think it was .424.

2nd in lifetime batting avg to Ty Cobb.

Nap Lajoie and Frankie Frisch were great ones.

Alomar was one of the best in the modern era... until the Mets traded for him.

Utley doesn't have the glove to be considered the best anything yet.

You really are serious. Would you have made this post and posed the same question if the Phils lost in the NLCS? No you wouldn't have. I guess because he is having a great World Series makes him the best second base player of all time or close to it.

If you are seriously asking this question, you are either:

    1. very young and havent seen some of the really great second basemen of the past

    2. a philly homer

    3. just plain stupid

    Which is it???

He did hit .424 one year which might be the highest single season batting average of all time. I think it is. The year he hit .401 was his best all around offensive season though. For comparisons sake, the season Ted Williams hit .406 (1941) he had 37 HR's and 120 RBI.

Hornsby's 1922 season was arguably the greatest offensive year in the history of (pre-steroid) baseball. He led the league in runs, hits, doubles, homers, rbi, avg, opb, slg, ops and total bases. His 1925 season is not far behind with a .403 BA, 39 HR's and 143 RBI. Sandwiched between those two monster years was a .384 season and his .424 year. Unreal numbers.

Hornsby had a six year stretch where he batted .370, .397, .401, .384, .424 and .403. He hit 153 HR's and had 692 RBI during that span. After a subpar .317 season the next year, he went on to have 3 seasons of batting .361, .387, and .380 respectively.

Rogers Hornsby's career batting average over 22 seasons was .358. He also hit 301 home runs and drove in 1584 runs.

Highest post-1901, by four points over Ty Cobb and George Sisler.

Some absurd batting averages were put up in 1887.

one more thing of interest that I just discovered ----

Triple crown for a decade --- only 4 players have accomplished this --- tops in their league in B AVG, RBI, and HR for the decade .

the only 4 to do it ----> Honus Wagner, Hornsby, Ted Williams, Pujols

Well, Pedroia isn't as good as Utley, and it is by a significant margin.

Chase Utley is extremely underrated by many. He is at worst the 5 or 6 best player in baseball right now, and has been for the last 4 years or so. He is twice the player that Ryan Howard is, seriously look at the WAR numbers, yet Howard gets all the press.

Because the phrase best second baseman of all time and Glenn Hubbard don't come close.

C'mon Rob. Look beyond the .244 career average. The man belongs in this conversation for his beard alone. It was a thing of beauty.

1984 Fleer card. Reminds me of card collecting. I thought you were serious. Here is a point for the 1984 Fleer card.

No question. He's the best position player on the Phillies and has been for the last few years. Howard has more power though, and chicks dig the long ball. Howard also Ks a lot more and doesn't get on base as much.

Plus, Utley's an easily better baserunner.
