New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie went down in practice Thursday with a noncontact knee injury and was taken for an MRI exam, according to two league sources.

The results of the MRI weren't immediately known, but the team is concerned it could be a serious injury. One source described it as a hyperextension, but that hasn't been confirmed by the team.

A hyperextended knee occurs when the knee joint is forced to extend forcefully beyond its normal range of motion. Normally, this is simply painful and can cause swelling for one to several days or weeks. The real problem occurs when ligament damage occurs which may require surgery. A severe hyperextensionfrequently results in damage to the ACL. Hyperextension itself rarely causes more than a few missed games.

I'm told that Antonio Cromartie's knee injury is not season ending. Not overly serious. However, his status vs Steelers is in doubt #nyj

Cromartie could miss 2 weeks, and with dee miliner injured jets could be left with former practice squad DBs.
