Similar to Pirates logic for starting Cole? Gray dominated Tigers in Game 2

Agree. Regardless of Colon's struggles vs. DET, I think you start the veteran.

I would've gone with Burnett tonight, too. Bring Cole and/or Gray in if trouble surfaces.

Colon had a bad first inning then dominated as well.
The move doesn't make much sense to me here, other than pissing Colon off if Oak gets past this round.
He's the guy who got you there.
Gray has been great, I like the kid.
But don't see a drastic upgrade sticking it in Colon in this spot.

The logic is that Colon is more adaptable to coming in for relief. All hands on deck in elimination game.

As far as I can tell, Colon has made a grand total of four relief appearances in the last 15 years.

Who do the Tigers use for relief? Sanchez? Scherzer toast, Fister toast, Verlander on mound. Rest of the arms besides Smyly are useless.

    Interesting.

I wonder if Scherzer can do one inning if necessary? Tuesday would have been his normal "throw" day if he was starting on Thursday.

    I wouldn't mess with it.

I wasn't a fan of pitching Max yesterday either. Completely different mentality, starters vs. relievers. Not to mention it's not like he was being asked to pitch in long relief. They were basically using him as a set-up man. That's a lot of pressure for a guy who's never had to do that before.

Scratch this, I just saw he threw 47 pitches. Probably too many to come back.

Good news for Tiger's & Over backers. Detroit's line-up is stacked with good veteran hitters that just faced Grey 5 days ago, they won't be fooled this time around.

To say he wasn't sharp yesterday would be an understatement.

But again, starters can kind of ease into their appearances and work out kinks in the early innings. Scherzer often does this. As a reliever, you can't afford that luxury.

Need Jackson to show up and set the table. By in large, he's been awful in this series. Torii too.

Nobody, JV goes 12 innings and 140 pitches if he has too.

This. Unless he's getting absolutely hammered, he's not coming out. This is one of the few times that pitch counts are irrelevant.

oddly enough teams that have seen a rookie for the 1st time in a series actually hit them worse the 2nd time round..who woulda thunk it? maybe just cause lot of times the rookie nervous 1st g, i dunno but numbers much better for pitcher 2nd time in series after club has saw him once...
