Corporations receive government contracts to pack prisons:
Winograd

  Former Congressional Peace Candidate Marcy Winograd says the privatization of prisons in the United States is beneficial to corporations as they lobby for government contracts to “pack” their prisons.
  
  
  “What we’re seeing right now in the United States of America with the privatization of prisons is lobbying by corporations there and their business as packing our prisons so they can receive government contracts and provide larger returns to their private investors,” Winograd told Press TV on Saturday.
  
  “What we’re seeing is an effort to influence the lawmaking in our country. So that for example in certain states California among them, I live in California, we have ‘tough-on crime’ laws like ‘three strikes’. This means that if you commit three felonies, you go to prison for 25 years to life,” she added.
  
  A new report shows the companies that own privately run prisons require them to be filled near capacity to maintain their profit margin.
  
  The report by the advocacy group “In the Public Interest” showed private prison companies mandate high inmate occupancy rates through their contracts with states - in some cases, up to 100 percent.
  
  The report finds three Arizona prisons must be filled to capacity under terms of its contract with Management and Training Corporation.
  
  “We’re talking about privatizing prisons to make profits for investors rather than investing in education in our communities, in job sectors that will truly make us safer and offer our children hope for the future,” Winograd, who is also a teacher, said.
