Same reason lottery, horse racing, casinos, etc etc are legal....

The real question is why is sports betting still illegal?

We have some really dumb social laws/rules....

if wiseguys got involved, then the dominos would start to fall. i would imagine organized crime doesn't have a stake in fantasy sports. but if/when they do, you'll see it go offshore, then we start seeing the same regulations placed on online gambling. that's my uninformed two cents.

My starting pitcher tonight was Mat Latos.

At least I won't get accused of being a wiseguy.

I read somewhere that it's considered gambling when you are betting on one spread or one player to perform

Since you have a whole team of different players, there's the loophole

Also might be why you can't take the entire white sox lineup and start them (not that you would want to do that anyway)

It's all semantics. This is absolutely gambling.

And at DraftKings, you pretty much can take the entire White Sox lineup, minus maybe a player or two.

Well I think that's why it makes you select players from more than one team, otherwise this would fall into gambling

The law says that because of this it is skill and not chance. Horseshit. It is both, just like sports betting.

When we're electing clowns who don't want to solve problem, rather pass more laws creating more problem(ie laws against large sodas), it doesn't matter what the law says it is how it is enforced that is now important.

What do you guys think of starting two pitchers in the same game?

Is this a long-term bad idea?

A lot of gambling sites have lines on players stats like "Curry over/under 25.5 points".
Which is exactly what fantasy sports is. So why can't there be a site that has just those lines?

I honestly couldn't even name you 10 current baseball players, maybe not even 5. I'm happy to bet the sport but would be useless for fantasy unless maybe I can just fill up my fantasy teams with the teams I want to bet on, never thought of trying that?

Only fantasy I do is NFL and MMA mainly. Doing golf just because the big pay out and make masters more entertaining.

I think the key is considering the differences in player props verse player pricing. Player props are looking to set market efficient prices whereas in DFS, creating market efficient pricing is not the objective. Pricing is manipulated within the context of controlling strategy and the set budget. If prices are too efficient, it eliminates strategy opportunities and would effectively make it on the same plane as sports gambling. If prices are too loose, that eliminates strategy as well, as everyone would draft the marquee players.

DFS sites, especially DraftKings, tend to shade slightly on the loose side, in order to appeal more to the recreational types so that they can fit into their budgets more well known players. Other sites such as Victiv take a completely different approach. Their player pricing and budgets are adjusted so that DFS players are forced to dig deeper and draft more value guys.

You can say the same thing about horse racing. Fantasy and horses get a special carve out in the law.

True LT, but the rake on the ponies is crazy high. Talk about sports vig being out of reach if legalized and taxed. The ponies area already doing it. Playing into that kind of vig is foolish, unless you are in close on the fixes, when the low vig sportsbooks are out there.
