    Braves Get Melky Cabrera

    and lose Vazquez...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4764085

They better land a big bat now with the freed up money they have to spend...

The New York Yankees have acquired right-hander Javier Vazquez from the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Melky Cabrera and left-hander Mike Dunn, sources told ESPN The Magazine senior writer Buster Olney.

    Vazquez

    Logan
The Braves also are sending right-hander Boone Logan to the Yankees, sources said, and the Yankees are sending the Braves $500,000 in the transaction.
Vazquez, with a 15-10 record, ranked second in the National League last season with 238 strikeouts and sixth in ERA at 2.87 as the No. 2 starter in the rotation. This is his second time around with the Yankees, having pitched in New York in 2004, when he went 14-10 with a 4.91 ERA.
This move opens the door for outfield moves for both teams. The Yankees now are expected to explore both the free-agent and trade markets for a left fielder. But they've continued to portray themselves as uninterested in anyone in the price range of Matt Holliday, Jason Bay or Johnny Damon.

    Cabrera

    Dunn
One name that has been on their radar screen is Mark DeRosa, whose $6 million asking price is in the dollar area they appear willing to allocate.
The Vazquez deal frees up about $9 million for the Braves to spend on upgrading their offense -- Vazquez's $11.5 million salary, minus the $3 million or so Cabrera figures to earn via arbitration, and getting the $500,000 in cash from the Yankees.
They'll now look to use that surplus on an outfield bat, a first baseman or possibly both.
Damon is one possibility, particularly because his home in Orlando is within minutes of the Braves' spring-training complex. Another option is free agent Xavier Nady, who could play first or the outfield and would come at a relatively low base because he is recovering from his second Tommy John surgery.
Or the Braves could look to deal an outfielder -- either Cabrera or possibly Jordan Schafer -- for a bat. They've been linked in trade rumors to Florida Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla, who could potentially slide to first base.

I can't believe the Braves dumped him just to get a bat.

It was solely a money thing for the Braves. Melky has some growth petential, his BA will rise in the N.L. His swing is more cut out for Turner field then the driving range called Yankee Stadium. Vazques is a damn good 4th starter.

I meant a free agent bat. Melky is a borderline starter.

I hate this trade. I am a Braves fan and disappointed to lose Vasquez. Now the Braves are stuck with a unhappy Lowe for a few years.

Yep not a fan of this trade either. They won't compete for a big name bat against the big market teams.

now Joba becomes the 5th starter..the rotation is deep but Petite gets another year older as well. That is a big concern. Re-signing Damon is huge. The perfect # 2 hitter for that line up.

Vasquez is not going to have Braves numbers with the Yankees because of DH.

They got a good young arm too - 19 y/o Arodys Vizcaino. Big time prospect. Future top of the rotation starter.

I agree this deal looks a little strange from the Braves' perspective right now, but Frank Wren has proven he knows what he's doing in my opinion. This also gives a good indication of Lowe's value on the market.

Frankly, I'm surprised the Yankees wanted Vazquez back. He wasn't great his first time around and now he's 5 years older. The guy has never been as good in the AL and has a history of not putting back-to-back solid years together. I think he's going to be an average starter this year in the AL East and will get booed at Yankee stadium regularly, just like his last time around.

your right theyll be better. He'll be the 3rd starter and win 20 games easily. Who has a better third starter than the yankees? Maybe the red sox and lackey but thats so close

He was 14-10 with a 4.91 for the Yankees in 2004. He was 12-16 with a 4.67 two years ago with the CWS!!

Look at this link, you are fukking dreaming:

Vazquez is easily more valuable, but he's older and makes more money.

The Yankees needed to get rid of Melky because he made less than two million this past season. Unacceptable.

Vazquez, on the other hand, makes eight figures.

Within six months, the Braves traded for two CFs: Nate McLouth and Melky Cabrera.

The Braves are pretty well set in the OF. Melky is an insurance policy for if Heyward isn't ready. He'll probably platoon in RF with him and spot McLouth in CF. Plus he can lead off which allows ATL to move McLouth down in the order.

Wait'll you guys get a load of Jason Heyward, btw.

And I still say don't sleep on Arodys Vizcaino in this deal. He's projected as a #1 or #2 starter in a couple years. Probably groomed to take Lowe's spot in the rotation in 2 seasons.

Trade is all about the money.

The more I look at it, it's not a horrible trade for the Braves, but considering they haven't signed a big bat since Andres Gallaraga it's a little disappointing. They signed Troy Glaus, who will rival Chipper in DL stints.

They still have a lot of money to use. I would be surprised if they use any of it though. They'll treat Heyward the same way they treated Hanson. Lincoln Financial is in it for the money, they could give a big crap about putting a decent team on the field.

Melky doing well in SF in 2012:

San Francisco's Melky Cabrera is 2 for 3 with a home run versus Morton. He recorded his fourth straight two-hit game Friday, raising his average to .414. Cabrera is batting .387 (12 for 31) in his last eight against the Pirates.
