buying points in a parlay vs teasing????

Ok, I'm just trying to understand this better

Example: 2 team parlay (buying 13 pts) vs 2 team 13pt teaser.

Why is the parlay giving me more than 2.5x than the teaser? It's the same play essentially right?

    Parlay

    • 2/28/2012 8:05 PM NBA Basketball 709 New Orleans Hornets/Chicago Bulls* Under 192½ -800
    • 2/28/2012 8:05 PM NBA Basketball 711 Washington Wizards/Milwaukee Bucks* Over 187½ -800

    Risking $100.00 To Win $26.56

Teaser - ties lose - basketball 13 pts

just realized you did it on the totals. because buying 13pts on the spread would result in something closer to 10.26 because 13pts on totals will cost you -1600.

doesnt make sense. Probably 5dimes error.

On the 5dimes Teaser payout page it lists 2 team 13pts ties lose as -975. The 100 to win 10.26 is correct based on those odds.

Buying 13 pts in the parlays is set at -800 like you show above so it makes more sense to buy the points in the parlay.

In the NFL we would always see that it would be cheaper to play a FAV on the moneyline instead of buying the points to bring the fav down to -.5

On a side note, it would be nice if the books would give us a pop-up notice when there is a way to do the same wager cheaper/for more profit, we wish

Just like the books that offer 4 team parlays (-110 odds) with a ripoff payout of only 10-1, when all you have to do is buy a half or 1 point on one of those teams to get the better payout. Of course they will never tell us to do that.

I do understand the difference in payouts/odds. I guess I'm just trying to figure out why the books have that difference when it's the same play. Maybe it's just how the payouts are structured. It just doesn't make sense if I'm the book to give away more value. I'm definitely not going to complain about it. But it just boggles the mind

IMO, Its not that the book is giving away more value in the parlays, its just that they are ripping people off in the teasers. Good thing you were smart enough to check into this, the majority of the players don't.

the break even point on the spread is 5 1/2 pts - ties reduce (since a tie in a parlay reduces).

Just remember that points are more valuable on the game spread compared to the game total.

5dimes 2 team parlay on totals buying 4 points is risk $100 to win 132.96
2 team 4point BB teaser ties reduce is +107 $100 to win $107.00

Again, there are also some opinionated threads on this site stating that teasing basketball totals is a cardinal sin for this reason.

    You are correct

Based on what I've been going through it seems the more points you tease the less value you would receive if you were to just buy the points in a parlay on the game spread. It also doesn't matter how many teams it is either.

The break even point is buying 5 1/2 points on the game spread when compared to teasing 5 1/2 points (ties reduce).

Now, when it comes to the game total it makes no sense to tease at all. There is more value in buying points on the game total with any number of points in a parlay.

Don't buy points on NBA totals.
They may be less horrendous than the equivalent teaser but they are still very poor as a value proposition.
