    Golf at the Bash

OK, in the thread that provides the sign-up dates for this year’s Bash, there were a few people who asked about a golf outing since it is not part of the official itinerary, as it was when we were in Las Vegas two years ago.

I’m definitely going to bring my clubs and play on Friday, and anyone who wants to join me is welcome to do so, but I also thought I’d start this thread to see what kind of interest there was to have a couple of groups get out and tee it up.

The first question, obviously, is deciding when to play, and I guess there are two considerations: time and weather. While a lot of attendees might want to stay out, carousing, until the wee hours of Friday morning, sunrise is at 6 a.m. and the earlier the start, the more we escape the 110-degree afternoons we know we’re going to have in August. The first official event of the Bash isn’t until 7 p.m. on Friday, so a noon start is better for those who are out all night, but it’s far more unbearable from a weather perspective. That might also allow people to fly in that morning and still make it to the first tee in time, and though I suspect most players would already be in town, I guess it could be a factor for some.

opie1988 has indicated he might be able to swing a deal for some good rates at Bali Hai, which is down on the southern end of The Strip, just past Mandalay Bay, but even if that doesn’t come through, there are some other courses that look to have reasonable rates.

If you’re interested in playing on Friday, say so in a post on this thread and provide your preferences for a starting time. (Personally, when it's hotter than hell, I’d rather be walking off the 18th green at 11 o’clock in the morning as opposed to just starting, but I’ve played in the summer heat of Vegas and Phoenix before and I’ll survive another 18 holes; I can always get a few hours of sleep before the Bash starts that night so that if I want to stay out all night, I’m ready to go.)

I’ve got a great gambling game we can play — one that gives all players a good chance, whether you shoot 72 or 120 or anything in between. I look forward to a very enjoyable 18 with you guys.

Every player pays an entry fee of $1 or $2 (or whatever amount the group decides it wants each player to ante up), and for this you get one card (out of a regular deck) dealt to you after golf is over and we're having a couple of cold ones. Every time you one-putt a green, you get another card; every time you take three or more putts on a green, you put another dollar into the pot (or whatever amount the group decides it wants to play for); if you hole out from anywhere off the green, you get two cards instead of one.

With three foursomes, you might easily get $50 or $60 or $70 in the pot playing only for one-dollar increments. The player with the best poker hand takes the cash.

So even if it takes a player five shots to get on the green, their last shot to the green is probably going to be from close range and it could be near enough to the hole to one-putt.

I'd rather give the high handicappers a chance at this kind of game as opposed to trying to equitably figure out strokes with players who don't have official handicaps.

Of course, this doesn't prohibit us from playing a Skins game or anything else.

Ill play for sure man. I worked at a golf course all through my college years gotten pretty good too.

Bought a new range finder and callaway driver over the winter im gonna want to def use.

As for the gambling game i always play texas holdem golf with my buddies....

everyone puts in 2 bucks before you tee off then you have the option of betting or checking then everyone tees off and the betting continues all the way to the hole.

So if my buddy hits it in the woods and i hit it down the middle i would bet 5 bucks he would fold and i would get the pot...

also normally you have a buyin amount so the betting isnt unlimited we normally buy in 100 but 20 works fine too.

love golf love gambling count me in

I'm definitely in. Bali Hi would be my first choice. I will make it no matter the tee time but I would probably suggest a more accommodating tee time than the break of dawn. I'd be cool with 8:30ish.

So if you stay at Golden Nugget I would think a hassle to play golf

I am not going to walk on the fukkin highway 5 fukkin miles carrying my fukkin clubs to get to a golf course

There are no courses downtown except one although its a drug fukkin den

I am not going to take a cab either for $20 and walk through the lobby with my clubs. We laugh at guys carrying clubs in Vegas, fukkin hamburgers. So before I get to the 1st tee I am in the hole $40 if I take a cab?? Also you can rent clubs but it does cost cash.

Walker why is the hotel not right on the fukkin golf course like The Encore/Wynn????

No way I am lugging clubs all over the City to play golf with compulsive gamblers, after golf then what??

Say the boys want to gamble at Mandela Bay??? I have to carry my fukkin clubs in the casino?????????????????????????????

Walker I have $3000 clubs man and not going to worry about theft and keeping my ye on them all day

So Friday if I go and play golf my whole fukkin day is carrying clubs????????

Walker no way..........put me in a suite man so I can do coke all day with hookers in my fukkin robe.

I'm in. Still not 100% on the bash. Need to work a few things out first, but if I make it to Vegas I will def. wanna play a round.

In regards to Tee time. Earlier the better.

I would be interested...but since I'm a night owl.....A noon start would be preferable. Two years ago with a 7 AM tee time, I was in a zombie like state the entire round. My normally bad game was even worse.

If it's a late start--I'm in. If not you guys have a great time.

Any course worth a damn will have rental clubs; I wouldn't think this would be much of a concern at all, especially in Vegas, where the percentage of players who are visitors is higher than most cities.

yeah i just looked into it

$55 for club rental, if opie gets us a rate of $100 or so then that's $155 - kind of a borderline number for me to play or not.

I'm out... I love golf but I'm pretty bad and the hot/humid weather would just make me miserable. I'll likely be too hungover anyways.

Not necessarily a group option but if anyone wants to play a course they'll not likely play anywhere else you can take an hour drive to mesquite and play wolf creek. The fukkin course is like a Dali painting and at higher elevation maybe cooler that time of year? Bring a LOT of golf balls if you ever play there.

I have family obligations that same week every year ironically the highlight of my obligations is running a charity golf tourney

There is some terrific golf in Mesquite, but you're right, for this group, that's way too far to go. I'm confident we'll end up with a very good green fee. I'm going to LV on business in June. I'll play the two courses I have in mind and see if they're any good. At that time I also can talk to the head pro about giving us a good price.

You have a dogtrack right down the road - Desert Pines

Also, you have Angel park which is very close to the 95 so very easy to get to from Golden Nugget. Both of those would have decent rates.

I think Spanish Trails became public recently, so that would be a fun one for anyone who hasnt ever played it (it used to be private).

I will play a round with you strokers.

I think we'll be fine with a reasonable rate. I'm going to guess we'll have a choice of places for $50 or less.

Looks like we'll have 10 or 12 that are interested; we'll have a blast.

I'm headed to LV in late June. I plan on playing twice, so I'll see what the courses are like and see what kind of rate we're talking about for mid-August. I'll let everyone know what I find.

    OK, guys, an update . . .

I'm roped into a business trip to Pennsylvania on the weekend of the Bash, so I'm out. As a result, someone else will have to take care of heading up the group if anyone is interested in golf on Friday morning. Good luck, and have a great time!
