Cam Newton is Even Better than Numbers Indicate

I would love to see this guy play with a good defense because I think a lot of his picks have been as a result of playing behind deficits and having to force throws he wouldn't make if he was playing with a lead

His overall numbers as ridiculous - on pace for 36 Total TDs and 5400 Total Yards (rushing and passing). I think if they put a good defense on the field next year in Carolina, that team will be one of the best teams in the entire league

thats the beauty of it my friend....the most important position to a franchise is in place...now its time for marty hurney to go out and build something around him...might take more than one offseason....but we shall see

If he didnt turn the ball over at such an alarming rate he would be a top 4 quarterback. On pace for 24 turnovers between picks and fumbles is way too much. Also not converting in the clutch to win twice against bad teams is not good..team could be 4-4 if he could score from the 10 at the end of games. Definitely fun to watch though.

I think a lot of the turnovers again are a result of playing with such a terrible defense (as well as obviously being a rookie)

Cam's always foced to throw the ball and try to score as much as possible because his defense seemingly gives up 30 points every game. That's just very difficult for a rookie QB to avoid turnovers in a situation like that

2 things: Cam owes a lot to Steve Smith having the year of his life. After two mediocre years Smith looks like he's 25 again. Also he has 275 yards after catch this year. Other rookie QBs in the league don't have a very good veteran WR like Smith to just air it out to on a weekly basis .

Keep in mind the Panthers are playing with zero pressure this year. They won't even sniff the playoffs, so these guys are just out there playing extremely loose and taking risks.. something a competitive team doesn't have the luxury to do.

A lot of his yards are due to playing from behind as well genius. Teams go into the prevent with a two score lead and are willing to give up the yards during a relatively long drive down the field.

understood - but he still has an 87 QB rating (excellent for a rookie) and his overall offensive production (when you include rushing) is incredible

the bengals are 5-2 and Andy Dalton is nowhere near as good as Cam - it's about the defense

The change between that offense last year and this year is insane, the only differences are cam, shockey, and olson. the offense couldnt move the ball at all last year.

I wouldn't be so quick to call someone a genius there. The Panthers have had the lead or was tied in the 4th quarter of the game in every game they have played.

Not true genius. Not against the Packers. Not against the Bears.

correct. glad you looked it up, I was only going off of my memory from watching every game. they was down by 5 in the 4th against Chicago and down by 7 in the 4th to GB neither of those are two score leads that would warrant a team to go into prevent defense.

Newton has an outside shot of making the Pro Bowl this year.

One of the best rookie performances I've seen in a while.

Bears were up 11 with 2 minutes left and they let Newton drive the entire field and they scored with 4 ticks on the clock.

I was at that game. Newton is talented, but he forces a lot too. I'm sure he'll mature some, but I think he'll always be turnover-prone.

Yea im a bears fan too, i remember that, all i was saying was you cant contribute all of his yards to teams going into prevent defense. He has a long way to go but he has played good.

In both of those games the defenses absolutely went into prevent defenses. Two score lead or not those defenses sat back and let Cam Newton move right down the field. The guy isnt bad but hes not amazing either. He can make plays with his feet and is tough to bring down but as far as a pure passer he is average at best.

how many picks does he have in the 1st half of game, as compared to 4th Qtr while playing with a deficit?

Do some research, then make a claim.

He corrected his mistake in the fist post.

But @first I thought he meant Panthers, not Indicat.

Peyton Manning was 3-13 his rookie year with 31 turnovers.

It is true that Bears took the lead by 11 with a couple minutes left and did let Cam drive the length of the field but Cam had his team in that game for it's entirety.

agreed. his turnovers don't strain the defense. the defense forces him to turn the ball over.

a better defense and Carolina could be sitting at 5-3 or 6-2 going into their bye week.
