Will the 2011 NFL season be cancelled?

I keep seeing people saying there won't be an NFL season in 2011. Personally, I just want to say BS and STFU. We might see the politics and drama play out for the next few months but eventually cooler heads will prevail and we'll have a 2011 NFL season. NFL isn't NBA, NHL or even MLB. This will get done. Opinions?

That same logic should have applied all the other time there were work stoppages in sports but they still happened. I doubt the 2011 NFL season will be cancelled though.

I don't think it will result in a cancellation but YAY for yet another union standing up for workers rights....pay these guys what they are worth and stop with this slave labor.....who can feed children on a mere $8 Million per year these days even if the organization does provide meals and rooms and travel......I feel so bad for these guys .

So, you're siding with owners, the billionaires? Oh, the irony.

Maybe you don't realize, but it's the owners that are breaking the contract and asking for more money, not the NFLPA.

No I was using sarcasm...both sides have pros/cons. You act like the billionaire owners made their billions off of the ownership....not the case except maybe a few instances.

No analysis needed. This sums it up nicely.

I didn't make this claim, but I looked it up and it looks to be true. The vast majority of NFL owners have become billionaires through NFL ownership.

It takes a little bit of explanation, but it basically takes about 10 years to generate $1 billion through NFL ownership. So, there are less than a dozen NFL owners who haven't yet owned their teams for 10 years, those would probably be the only NFL owners who didn't yet become billionaires through NFL ownership.

I'll use some examples to illustrate what I'm talking about. In 1999 Dan Snyder bought the Redskins for $800 million. In 2009 (my most recent data) the Redskins were worth 1.55 billion, which almost doubles what he paid for the franchise in 1999. In 2009, his operating income from the franchise for that year was $90 million. So, through the combination of appreciation of franchise value and operating income, it isn't tough to see how one can become a billionaire as an NFL owner. A couple other examples are Jerry Jones buying the Cowboys for 140 million in 1989 and the Cowboys were worth 1.65 billion in 2009, Bob Kraft bought the Pats for 175 million in 1994 and the Pats were worth 1.365 billion in 2009.

Edit: I found the 2010 update, but since I already typed everything from the 2009 list, I'll just leave it.

I have a feeling the owners will agree not to lockout after the agreement exipres and the union and owners will make a patchwork deal just for the next year so football can go on as planned and they can work all year long to get a good agreement out.

they can not be so stupid to cancel the entire season.

First of all, the player play for the OWNERS, not the pther way around. If the players do not like what the owners want, they can shove it up thir tails. The owners are guaranteed MILLIONS of dollars even if there is not a season. The players are guaranteed squat, which is exactly what these overpaid primadonnas deserve. The only way that there will be a season is if both sides give a little. The owners will give 10% and the players 90%. That is the way it should be. All of you wanna be millionaires should try something new like working for your money. I did, and no one in my business tells me how much to pay them. I pay a certain salary. If they are not happy with it, they can go elsewhere.

The owners shouldn't give in. The players need the money more than they do.

It's a coin flip. I believe there will be maybe 5 games canceeled before their acts get together. Did you hear in Wisconsin that collective bargaining is being removed as a right from their union? Republican lawmakers are trying to gut the unions in that northern state.

I hope they don't cancel the season, but negotiations or lack there of look bleak. It's going to come down to who really wants to work out a deal. Both sides not budging or willing to compromise is pathetic. So what if the owners have to pay a little more to the players. They are just going to jack up prices to make up the difference. Not a big secret there. Just get the deal done.

I'm looking for a repeat of the '87 season with perhaps fewer games "locked out"

Players live day-to-day, owners have the deep pockets, public just wants to see some games and could care less who's right or wrong. The owners will make much more money long term, short lived players will lose money overall.

All this yapping about 18 games being too long a season garners no sympathy with the public; they think the players are a bunch of pussies.

Money is what makes the world go round n round...There will be a NFL season simply due to the fact that both owners and players have too much to lose!!

They wouldn't cancel the season unless they couldn't agree before Nov/Dec. It just might be shortened.

I don't know if any books have odds on this, but I hear the O/U is August 1st, which is still over 4 1/2 months away.

Things are going about how we expected. But as things go to court, I'm not sure if anyone knows what'll happen there.

there will be football, the key was that the networks $$$ wont enter the owners pockets thanks to the verdict of the mn judge, and thats was the owner plan,. there's no way jerry jones can pay his jerryworld mortgage without a nfl season, i'm sure there a lot of owners that need the revenue from the season to pay some debts, plus the networks (cbs, nbc, fox and espn) will push and put the national attention in favor of fans. You can be confident before august we'll have an agreement from both parties, the question is "it''s going to be a quality season?" i'm not so sure.

i highly doubt this will happen. Losing the nfl itself would hurt the US economy, not to mention piss people off. There is no way this will happen
