Greatest NFL TE of all time

Arguing w friends ... Mark Witten ... Durable as hell, Great Blocker, Great Hands ... most All around TE ever

Shannon Sharpe ... Speed, Undersized, Good Blocker, Great Hands

Tony G ... Receiver, but never blocked for shit

Gates has the stats, and is a better blocker than Tony G ... but that is not really saying much

Gronk ... Cant stay on the field ... but is only 27 yrs old ... if he plays only 3 more full season he might be able to catch Gates, TD wise ... (and if Hernandez is never there, he probably has over 7k yards, 80+ TD's and would have caught him easily).

Chargers have the top 2: Kellen Winslow Sr and Gates. Gronk could maybe get into the equation if he plays a few more years. But one really has to adjust for all the bullshit rule changes over the past 20 years. In the old days, receivers could routinely get clotheslined. Receivers have it so good now. The passing numbers are a joke.

In my lifetime I would say Tony Gonzalez if im being honest. I liked Shockey because he seemed crazy like me.

I also disagree that Gates is a better blocker than Tony Gonzalez was. There was a reason Brandon manamoleunadamia nut was a mainstay with the chargers during Gates prime. Both are below average so its a wash in my opinion.

Good thread, Bayer. Honestly, Witten is very close to the top.

But I'm a fan of Shannon Sharpe. Thought he was a great player.

Tony G was the prototype which paved the way for gates. Witten vastly underrated

your analysis of most of these players is laughable..

Witten is solid but is not even in the conversation, no way in fukking hell is he the best all around TE ever.

Gonzalez was a better blocker than Gates ever was.

Jay Novacek was a great TE. Injuries eventually got him. Thought Bubba Franks was going to be great and was dam good.

If you talk great tight ends you have to mention Tight End U, the Miami Hurricanes. Hurricane Tight ends who went on to play in the NFL have included Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow II, Greg Olsen, Jimmy Graham, and Clive Walford.

Although I would not argue much against Tony G being the best all time. Winslow was the best overall receiver.

Tony Gonzo has the 2nd most receptions in NFL history, and the guy lasted 17 years in the league while only missing 2 games in his career. Hard to compare to old school guys like John Mackey, but I'd prolly put him in contention for top dawg too. With that being said, don't know if I've ever seen a TE as dominant as Gronk- when he's full strength.

Winslow revolutionized the position, he was the first modern day prototypical tight end. Will never forget his playoff game in the stifling heat in Miami.

Jim Brown, to a lesser extent. Hank Aaron. The list is endless.

Nor his playoff game in incredibly cold conditions (coldest game ever?) in Cincinnati. I mentioned him earlier in the thread. Judging by the responses, most on here weren't watching football before 2000. Winslow DID revolutionize the position. The guys now have bigger numbers but the rules are all slanted in favor of offense. Imagine what Winslow's numbers would've been like if he got to play with the current rules?
